Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- In a fourth quarter that featured poor shooting by both teams, the Chicago Bulls stopped missing first.

Elton Brand scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Bulls handed the New York Knicks their sixth consecutive road loss, 81-72.

The Bulls missed their first eight shots of the fourth quarter before Bryce Drew connected with 6:11 left for a 69-65 lead.

New York was just as futile, however, but pulled within 72-69 with four minutes to go when Latrell Sprewell scored to end a seven-minute field goal drought. Chicago responded with a basket by Ron Artest and a 3-pointer from Drew for a 77-69 cushion with 2:24 to play.

"I thought we had a really good effort on everybody's part tonight," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "They (the Knicks) really struggled shooting it. It was not a typical night for Latrell Sprewell. Ron Artest did a good job on Latrell and kept his concentration defensively all night."

The Knicks misfired on 17-of-20 shots in the final 12 minutes to fall to 8-9 in the second of back-to-back games this season.

"It's a huge setback," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "To get homecourt advantage we need around 50 wins. We're at the end of the year and it's inexplicable to me how we play at times."

Drew scored all of his 15 points in the second half and Corey Benjamin added 13 for Chicago, which concluded a season-high six-game homestand at 2-4. The Bulls picked up their 10th victory after claiming their 10th win last season on February 6.

"We played great defense and New York was frustrated," Brand said. "We got over the fourth quarter woes and (Floyd) said that if we just stuck with our defense and ran our offensive sets, we will get the win."

Brad Miller scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Fred Hoiberg added a career-high 12 assists for the Bulls, who shot 42.5 percent (31-of-73).

"Brad had some big defensive boards late and Fred Hoiberg did as well," Floyd said. "Fred had 12 assists and no turnovers. That was a real solid floor game for him."

Allan Houston scored 23 points and Sprewell added 16 on 4-of-16 shooting for New York, which has not won away from home since a 103-100 overtime triumph at Miami on February 4.

"This game kind of tells you what the Knicks have been about all year," Sprewell said. "We've just been up and down. We're playing for playoff position. These are the kind of games you need. This was not a good performance by a lot of the guys on our team."

The Knicks played without Marcus Camby, who sat out with back spasms one night after collecting 27 points and 17 rebounds in a win over Boston.

Chicago jumped out to a 10-4 lead 3:35 into the game and led 27-21 after one quarter. A basket by Kurt Thomas pulled New York into a 37-37 tie 4 1/2 minutes before intermission, but the Bulls took a 47-45 edge into the locker room.

New York shot 36.5 percent (27-of-74) and made just 5-of-20 3-pointers.
