Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Corey Maggette scored 12 of his career-high 23 points in the fourth quarter, when the Los Angeles Clippers used their bench and energy to post an 88-81 victory over the Sacramento Kings.

Maggette hit 7-of-14 shots from the floor and made 8-of-9 free throws as the Clippers ended a three-game losing streak. He played 12 of his 23 minutes in the fourth quarter, helping Los Angeles outscore Sacramento, 24-21.

"I think I had the confidence I needed because coach gave me the opportunity to go where my biggest strength is, posting up," Maggette said. "You've got to be confident when you want to show the coach what you can do on the blocks."

The Clippers' bench outscored Sacramento's, 44-8.

"We usually get a spark off our bench, but tonight we got no spark from anybody," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "They played well tonight. We were aware that this team was going to be tough. They are a group of young guys who play hard every night."

Maggette also had one of the game's biggest rebounds, when he grabbed Vlade Divac's missed layup with 30.8 seconds to play. After getting fouled, Maggette made 1-of-2 free throws to push the Clippers' lead to 84-79.

"It was important for the team because we got the win," said Maggette about his performance. "It wouldn't do anything if I scored 30 points and we lost the game."

Eric Piatkowski and Lamar Odom each scored 11 points for Los Angeles, which also ended a five-game losing streak against Sacramento. Cherokee Parks had 12 rebounds and Odom 11 as the Clippers held a 49-41 advantage on the boards. Odom played despite a left hip pointer and made just 4-of-15 shot in 34 minutes.

Peja Stojakovic scored 31 points and Scot Pollard added 15 and a career-high 18 rebounds for Sacramento, which again was without injured All-Star Chris Webber and used just eight players.

The Kings shot 41 percent (28-of-69) and fell to 6-4 since Webber suffered a sprained ankle against Utah on February 13.

Stojakovic made 13-of-20 shots, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. But the rest of the Kings were 0-for-6 from behind the arc.

"Stojakovic's shots bothered me a lot more than my hip," Odom said. "He's a great offensive player. I definitely respect his oeffensive game. He's one of the best shooters I've ever seen in person. Basketball is humbling. He humbled me tonight. Of course I was embarrassed."

The Kings cut the deficit to 79-75 when Stojakovic made a 22-footer with 3:37 left. Doug Christie, who had 11 points, followed with a pair of free throws 44 seconds later. But Los Angeles came no closer as Maggette responded with a 3-pointer for an 82-77 lead with 2 1/2 minutes remaining.

Pollard, who was 7-of-7 from the line, made two free throws to trim the deficit to 82-79 with 2:26 left. The Kings had a chance to again trim the margin after a turnover by Odom. But Stojakovic missed a driving layup and Sean Rooks made 1-of-2 from the line for an 83-79 with 45 seconds to go.

After Maggette's free throw, Jason Williams drove for a layup and Rooks pinned his shot against the backboard. Odom grabbed the rebound and sank two free throws with 26 seconds left to make it 86-79.

"We made some really good defensive plays down the stretch," Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry said. "Sean's block on Jason Williams when they tried to get a quick two I thought was a big play and we just came up with rebounds. It's a good win for us, this team is real quality."

Odom then blocked Divac's shot in the lane and sprinted to the other end to receive a long pass from Rooks. Odom caught the ball at the foul line and threw a perfect alley-oop to Darius Miles, who dunked for an 88-79 lead.

Stojakovic poured in 15 points in the first quarter as the Clippers took a 22-21 edge.

Maggette did not play in the first period, but scored 11 straight points in the second to give the Clippers the lead for good. Rookie Quentin Richardson followed Maggette's baskets with a 3-pointer give Los Angeles its biggest lead, 39-27, with 4:57 left in the second.

Los Angeles held a 46-39 lead at the break. Christie's dunk just over one minuete into the third pulled the Kings within, 46-44. Jeff McInnis and Stojakovic traded baskets before McInnis' layup gave the Clippers a 52-46 lead with 9:14 left in the third.

The Clippers built the lead to 62-52 on a 20-footer by Parks with 4:15 left in the third. Sacramento scored the final six points in the third period and trailed 64-60.
