Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- It was too much to expect the Chicago Bulls to win a game like this.

Despite having leads in both overtime periods, the Bulls lost their 16th consecutive road game, 126-122, in double overtime to the Milwaukee Bucks, who got a career-high 40 points from Sam Cassell.

Sam Cassell had 10 assists and hit the biggest shot of the game -- a tying 3-pointer as time expired in the first overtime -- as the Bucks dodged a bullet and snapped a two-game losing streak.

The Bulls hit numerous clutch shots but ran out of miracles late in the second overtime.

After Glenn Robinson sank a jumper to give Milwaukee a 123-122 lead with 30 seconds left, Ron Artest misfired on a 3-pointer with 17 seconds to go. Michael Ruffin grabbed the rebound for Chicago and was fouled but missed both free throws.

Darvin Ham sank two from the line at the other end to put the Bucks ahead by three and Artest -- a 28 percent 3-point shooter -- missed another 3-point attempt as Chicago fell to 2-27 on the road.

"Chicago is snake-bitten a little bit in close games," Milwaukee coach George Karl said. "The combination of Sam and a little luck got us a win tonight."

Chicago had a three-point lead with 10 seconds left in the first overtime when Robinson misfired on what seemed to be the Bucks' last chance. But Cassell grabbed the rebound, dribbled back to the 3-point line and drained the game-tying shot as the horn sounded.

"The first option was Lindsey Hunter, but he wasn't open and I had a look but I missed," Robinson said. "Sam was in position. He got the rebound and he was on fire all game and he just took it and made it."

"I can't repeat what I said when I saw it," Bulls guard Fred Hoiberg said. "But if we box out and don't let him get the rebound, we win the game. We controlled both overtimes but Sam was unconscious and there was nothing we could do."

Cassell made 18-of-24 shots as he surpassed his previous high of 36 set Febraury 6, 1999 at Atlanta.

Robinson finished with 31 points and nine rebounds. Ray Allen added 17 points on 11-of-18 shooting but committed five of Milwaukee's 15 turnovers before fouling out.

Ham collected 10 points and 11 rebounds and Ervin Johnson grabbed 13 rebounds off the bench for the Bucks, who held a 48-37 edge on the boards.

Milwaukee played without forward Tim Thomas, who missed nis second straight game with back spasms.

With his free throws in double overtime, Ham redeemed himself for missing two when Milwaukee had a 95-93 lead with 1:26 left in regulation.

Neither team scored until Elton Brand tied the game when his fadeaway jumper rattled in with 25 seconds to go. Robinson missed a short jumper on Milwaukee's next posession and Hoiberg missed a desperation half-court shot at the buzzer.

Chicago trailed 93-85 with five minutes to go in regulation but ran off eight straight points to tie it with 2:28 to go. Cassell drained a jumper to put the Bucks ahead by two before Brand eventually tied the game.

"We've been playing like a veteran team since the All-Star break," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "It's becoming a case of learning out to finish games. We need to finish better. This is an important game to learn from."

Hoiberg scored a career-high 28 points on 9-of-14 shooting and dished out 13 assists.

Brand had 31 points and nine rebounds and Brad Miller added 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Bulls, who have not won on the road since December 13 at Boston.
