Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan had 26 points and 11 boards and David Robinson continued his climb up the all-time rebounding list as the San Antonio Spurs rolled to a 124-95 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Duncan recorded his league-leading 47th double-double as the Spurs (39-19) improved to 20 games over .500 for the first time this season and tied the Utah Jazz for the best record in the Midwest division.

Robinson needed 13 rebounds to pass former Spur Artis Gilmore for 35th place on the all-time list. In just 24 minutes, he swept 15 to increase his career total to 9,163.

"It's getting that time of year where I am hitting my stride," said Robinson, who is in his 12th season. "I am starting to feel good night in and night out, running the floor real well and jumping real well right now. So I am trying to take advantage of that and make the team successful."

San Antonio used an 18-3 run early through the third quarter to break open the game and build a 76-57 lead. Brevin Knight hit a short jumper to pull the Hawks within 58-54 but Terry Porter and Derek Anderson hit buckets.

Duncan scored before Robinson, who finished with 16 points, knocked down four free throws. Avery Johnson nailed a long jumper before Robinson capped the run with an uncontested slam, his last points of the game.

"We've got to win these games, the first half was pretty lackadaiscal," Duncan said. "We had to turn it up in the second half. We didn't want to have a repeat of (losing to) Chicago, that was definitely in the back of our minds."

The Spurs scored a season-high 38 third-quarter points. They poured it on and posted their highest total of the season as they improved to 12-0 vs. below .500 teams.

Atlanta, incapable of competing with the size and talent of San Antonio, never scored more than 28 points in any quarter.

"San Antonio is a very good team," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "They have outstanding experience and size and they have excellent players around the two big guys. We were hanging in there for a minute, (but) that lead widens quickly when you play a team like this."

San Antonio had seven players in double figures. Porter scored 12 points and Danny Ferry 11 for the Spurs, who scored 11 in a row over a two-minute span in the fourth quarter with the reserves on the floor.

"I thought the difference was Duncan and Robinson," Hawks forward Toni Kukoc said. "They're just too big for us. ... The big guys just dominated underneath."

Steve Kerr went 5-of-5 from the field, including 2-of-2 from behind the arc, for 12 points. Samaki Walker led the reserves with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Antonio Daniels added 14, also going 2-of-2 from long range.

"He was tremendous," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said of Walker. "He allowed us to sit David and give him some rest. He's a big-time rebounder and shot blocker and offensively, he's better than a lot of people think."

"We had a real solid second half," Daniels said. "Our starters initiated the charge."

Atlanta has lost seven straight games and has not won at the Alamodome since the 1997 season.

Duncan hit a turnaround jumper with time expiring in the first half to put the Spurs up 58-52 at the break.

Kukoc scored 19 points and Chris Crawford added 16 for the Hawks, who shot 44 percent (35-of-79) from the field and were outrebounded, 56-31.

Knight and backcourt partner Jason Terry shot just 8-of-20. The starters were just 8-of-38 for the Hawks.
