Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Eddie Jones scored 11 of his 18 points in the second half, including five during a key third-quarter run, as the Miami Heat cruised to a 91-79 victory over the sloppy Cleveland Cavaliers.

Jones made a layup and hit a 3-pointer during the run that led Miami to its fourth win in its last five games. He collected five rebounds and four assists and drained 4-of-5 from the arc while the rest of the Heat made just 1-of-5 from 3-point range.

Anthony Mason had 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds. Tim Hardaway had 18 points and eight assists for the Heat, who moved 1 1/2 games ahead of New York for third place in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

The Heat took the lead for good in the second quarter but needed a 10-0 run midway through the third period to put away the game.

"It seemed as though everyone was into it mentally and even though we didn't score well early I could see the focus and concentration," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "As the game progressed we kept getting better and better."

Miami's 52-48 lead was cut in half by a pair of free throws from Clarence Weatherspoon with 7:44 left in the third, but the Heat would respond by turning up the defense and turning on the offense.

"The key for us is defense, defense and defense," Hardaway said. "We always pride ourselves on defense but offense has to come back around."

Hardaway drilled a 3-pointer to spark the run, then dished to Jones for a fast-break layup on the following possession. After Matt Harpring missed a layup for Cleveland, Jones followed with a 3-pointer to give Miami its first double-digit lead at 61-50 with 4:47 left in the third quarter.

"Normally in the third we come out slow and sluggish, which we did a little bit tonight, but we kept the lead and just pushed it," Hardaway said.

Bruce Bowen added a free throw for the Heat before Weatherspoon ended the run with a short jumper. But Miami scored eight of the next 10 points and took its largest lead, 70-54, with 14 seconds remaining.

Normally a methodical half-court team, The Heat outscored the Cavs 21-4 on the fast break.

"They were missing a lot of jumpers and we were out running," Riley said. "For the first three games the Cavs outscored us in the fast-break points, but we got them tonight."

"We wanted to try to get the tempo in our favor and control it and get easy baskets," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "It was the exact opposite. Our 22 turnovers put them out on the break and gave them numbers a lot of times and that hurt us."

Cleveland scored just 14 points on 5-of-15 shooting in the decisive third quarter. During the Heat's run, the Cavs missed five shots and committed two turnovers during a four-minute drought.

Andre Miller and Lamond Murray led Cleveland with 14 points apiece but combined for 10 turnovers.

Weatherspoon had 12 points and nine rebounds and Chris Gatling added 12 and eight for the Cavs, who have lost 16 of their last 18 and have the NBA's second-worst record over their last 36 games.

The teams split the four-game season series, marking the first time since the 1993-94 season that Miami has failed to win three games from Cleveland in the same season.
