Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Cory Alexander scored seven of his season-high nine points during a 13-2 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters and helped the Orlando Magic to a 95-81 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

Orlando began the pivotal run by scoring the final eight points of the third period. After Juwan Howard dunked to give a Dallas a 69-63 advantage with 1:56 left, Tracy McGrady made 1-of-2 free throws 34 seconds later to start the burst.

"We were kind of tired and I was pretty much the only one that was fresh," said Alexander, who played a season-high 20 minutes. "I just wanted to come out and see if I could give the guys a lift, basically.

"I'm playing for the best person I could possibly be playing for. I don't know if everybody understands, I was a rookie and Doc (Rivers) was the old fogey on the team and he took care of me then and during the lockout season."

Rookie of the Year candidate Mike Miller made just 3-of-11 shots but hit a 21-footer with 53 seconds left to pull Orlando within 69-66.

Dallas center Shawn Bradley received a technical foul with 24 seconds remaining and Pat Garrity made the free throw. Alexander hit a jumper with 11.8 seconds left to tie the score and sank a short jumper with 2.5 seconds remaining to put the Magic ahead for good.

"I think what killed us is they scored eight points in the last minute of the third quarter," said Dallas guard Steve Nash, who had 10 points and six assists. "We went from up six to down two and you cannot allow that to happen. They had the momentum."

Dallas missed its first two shots in the fourth quarter and Alexander sank a 3-pointer to push Orlando's lead to 74-69 with 10:19 remaining. Six different players scored in the run that Don Reid capped with a basket for an 84-71 lead with 6:15 left.

McGrady had 23 points and seven rebounds and Darrell Armstrong added 21 points and six assists for Orlando, which has won four of its last five games. The Magic moved within one-half game of the idle Toronto Raptors for sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

Garrity led five reserves with 10 points as Orlando's bench outscored Dallas', 29-15.

"It was great for us because we were really flat yesterday," Garrity said, referring to Sunday's 94-83 loss to Detroit. "Doc said after the game, `I don't know how we're going to win this game tomorrow, but you've got to go in there and find a way,' and we did."

Dirk Nowitzki recorded 22 points and 14 rebounds and Howard added 17 and eight for Dallas, which fell to 18-12 on the road, remaining two victories shy of the single-season franchise record for road wins.

"I think we lost the lead because of our defense, and I would say, turnovers," Howard said. "Once that happened, they went down the other end and scored. They wanted it more than we did down the stretch. I thought we should have won the game no matter what."

Michael Finley added 14 points for the Mavericks, who had won the previous four meetings with the Magic. Finley, Howard and Nowitzki, Dallas' starting frontcourt, shot a combined 14-of-42.

Howard scored 13 points in the first half as the Mavs took a 47-44 edge into the locker room.
