Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs look like they are tuning up for the playoffs. The Seattle SuperSonics look like they are ready to call it quits.

San Antonio earned its most lopsided victory in series history, a 101-73 rout of Seattle, which put together its worst offensive performance of the season.

The Spurs shot 53 percent (36-of-68) from the field and made 7-of-13 shots from 3-point range en route to its fourth straight victory. They pulled within one-half game of Utah for the lead in the Midwest Division and the Western Conference.

"We played real good for four quarters and when we do that we are a good basketball team," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said.

Tim Duncan had 22 points and nine rebounds and David Robinson added 19, nine and three blocks as the Spurs dominated the paint.

Derek Anderson scored 12 of his 14 points in a monster first half for San Antonio and Antonio Daniels added 13 on 3-of-4 shooting from the arc off the bench.

"We came out strong and had a really good start," Duncan said. "We shot the ball well. I thought our defense played well all night and we got big plays from Antonio Daniels, Derek Anderson and David."

The Spurs scored the first eight points and never trailed. They shot 71 percent (5-of-7) from downtown and held a 27-17 edge on the boards in the first half.

"The first half was one of our better halves in a while," said Popovich. "We have been trying to put together 48 minutes and tonight was as close as we have been for awhile."

San Antonio led by nine with 7:22 left in the second quarter and finished the first half with a 24-9 run for a 58-34 halftime lead. Anderson scored seven points in the burst and Robinson added six, all from the line.

The Sonics shot a season-low 31 percent (27-of-86) overall and their total was their lowest of the season. They shot just 29 percent (13-of-44) in the first half and scored a season-low 34 points in the first 24 minutes.

"We just played really good defense and at the same time they had a really bad night shooting," Popovich said. "I really don't know how much we had to do with it."

"We didn't come to play," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "Why? I just don't know. Why not come and play in your own building?"

Gary Payton scored 28 points and made 12-of-25 shots but had very little help.

"You could see who was playing hard and who was putting their heart out there and who was not," McMillan said. "(Payton) hasn't quit. He played 47 minutes and I thought all of those minutes were with intensity."

Vin Baker was the only other Seattle player in double figures with 11 points but made just 3-of-14 shots. He eclipsed 10,000 career points early in the first quarter.

Seattle's Ruben Patterson was held scoreless while missing all seven shots and did not play in the second half.

"It was a tough night for him. He was trying to get to the basket but Tim and David were coming over and clogging and blocking shots," McMillan said. "It's just a tough night when you can't get to the basket and your jumper is not falling."

The Sonics also played without Rashard Lewis and Brent Barry.

"To lose two of your best perimeter shooters in a game where you need to have shooting is tough," McMillan said. "But we need to show more intensity then we showed tonight."

The Sonics have lost eight of their last 11 and fell 6 1/2 games behind Minnesota for the Western Conference's final playoff spot.
