Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Bulls are not used to having or holding big leads but adapted to it quite well.

Chicago, which has the NBA's worst record, grabbed the lead in the first quarter and never relinquished it in an 87-74 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Bulls went ahead for good with a 20-8 run midway through the first quarter and built a 56-41 halftime lead behind 13 points from Brad Miller and 11 from rookie Marcus Fizer.

Miller and Ron Artest scored six points each in the first-quarter run and Fizer nailed a 30-footer with three-tenths of a second left to give the Bulls a 29-18 lead after the first 12 minutes.

Chicago scored the first five points of the second quarter and opened a 34-18 lead just two minutes in. The Bulls went ahead by as many as 20 but Cleveland closed within 15 at halftime as Andre Miller scored nine of his 12 points in the final six minutes of the half.

"We had a really nice first half," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "I thought our starters got things established early. We got nice shot selection in the first half and our defense was very solid."

Cleveland opened the third quarter with six straight points to close within nine, but Fred Hoiberg nailed a 3-pointer to extend the lead to double digits. The Cavaliers got no closer and lost their fifth straight game.

"We never let (Cleveland) get their heads up," Brad Miller said. "I think they only had one run. Each time they did, we came back down and hit a couple baskets."

"It's been hard for me to find out how many guys came to play with effort tonight," Cavs coach Randy Wittman said. "Right from the beginning we didn't have any desire to have anything happen at either end of the court."

Chicago held Cleveland to 35 percent (28-of-79) shooting and collected 12 steals in a sloppy perfromance by both teams.

Fizer scored 17 points and Brad Miller added 13, seven rebounds and five assists.

Elton Brand posted his 33rd double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds despite making just 6-of-15 shots from the floor.

"I had an off night. I missed some shots I normally hit but we still won by double-digits," he said. "It was nice to have a little pressure off me."

Ron Artest added 14 points, nine rebounds and seven steals for the Bulls. Artest has 30 steals in his last six games after averaging just over one steal per game in the first 53 games of the season.

"I think he is just aware, he anticipates passing lanes extremely well," Floyd said. "He is playing the best for us since he has been here."

Cleveland's Matt Harpring scored 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting but made just one basket after halftime. Rookie Chris Mihm added 13 points and Jimmy Jackson 11 for the Cavs, who have the worst record in the NBA over the last 36 games.

Chicago (11-48) improved to 8-28 since December 15 while Cleveland (22-37) is 7-29 during that stretch.
