Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- The Orlando Magic had no need to foul Ben Wallace in this one.

Tracy McGrady scored 23 of his 37 points in the second half and added 11 rebounds and five assists to lead the Magic to a 112-102 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

It was the 20th 30-plus point game of the season for the 6-8 All-Star swingman.

"He's a handful," said Pistons coach George Irvine. "They also have good shooters, which makes it difficult to double team him, because you have to rotate. We try to play him straight up as possible, but he puts it on the floor and gets to the basket easy."

Rookie Mike Miller finished with 20 points, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, and former Piston Don Reid had a team season-high 17 rebounds in 27 minutes off the bench for the Magic.

"It was one of his ex-teams, he just controlled the boards," Magic point guard Darrell Armstrong said. "Me and Bo (Outlaw) weren't on the floor and we looked up and heard them say, `Subway substitute of the game,' and I looked at Bo and I said, `Dang, 17 rebounds. He's getting a new contract tonight.'"

With Reid leading the way, Orlando outrebounded Detroit, 56-41.

"That's what this team is capable of, you never know who it's going to be," McGrady said. "Guys come off the bench, really contribute to the win. Tonight, it was Don Reid. When a guy rebounds like that, it just helps us get out on transition and run."

The Magic have won 14 of 18 games, including nine of 10 at home.

Detroit's Jerry Stackhouse scored 36 points but was 11-of-30 from the field and 3-of-11 from 3-point range.

"It was an uphill battle the whole game even when we got closer," Stackhouse said. "We cannot afford to fall behind like that."

Sunday's game between the teams ended with some bad blood when Orlando coach Doc Rivers ordered his players to intentionally foul Wallace, a former Magic player who is a 30 percent foul shooter, in the fourth quarter. He missed 8-of-12 as Orlando climbed back within one point after trailing by as many as 17. However, the Pistons survived, 93-84.

Wallace clearly was disturbed by the tactics and directed some harsh words toward his former coach. But on Wednesday, Wallace only made two trips to the line as the Magic were in control most of the way. Afterward, he downplayed Sunday's events.

"There was no controversy. Everybody is making it out to be one," Wallace said. "They did what they had to do and I did what I had to do. Tonight, they just jumped on us early."

McGrady and Miller each scored eight points in the first quarter, when the Magic stormed to a 33-23 lead. They increased the advantage to 64-49 at halftime, but let the Pistons back into the game in the second half.

Stackhouse capped a 22-10 run with a 3-pointer, pulling the Pistons within 78-75 with 2:47 left in the third quarter.

But McGrady hit a jumper in the lane and Miller followed with a 3-pointer from the left sideline, giving Orlando an 83-75 advantage. A pair of free throws by McGrady with five seconds left in the quarter increased Orlando's lead to 90-79.

A 3-pointer by Dana Barros pulled Detroit within 92-85 three minutes into the fourth quarter, but McGrady hit a pair of free throws, a 3-pointer from the right sideline and a layup to open a 99-85 lead with 7:49 left.

"Those types of baskets are deflating when you work hard to get back," Stackhouse said.

But the Pistons fought back again. Ironically, a pair of free throws by Wallace pulled them within 106-100 with 2:26 left.

However, Reid grabbed an offensive rebound and converted a layup, McGrady hit two free throws and Armstrong and Reid converted one free throw apiece to seal the win.

"I thought we basically controlled the game, but we did allow them to stay around," Rivers said. "But kudos to the rebounding. Detroit is a great offensive rebounding team and they only had seven for the game. That is a terrific job on the boards."
