Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Even without leading scorer Jamal Mashburn, the Charlotte Hornets were not about to give up the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference to the Orlando Magic.

Guards Baron Davis and David Wesley combined for 41 points and 19 assists to lead the Hornets to a 97-84 victory over the Magic.

After having a seven-game winning streak snapped by Minnesota on Tuesday, the Hornets got back on the winning track and moved 1 1/2 games ahead of Orlando for fifth place in the East.

"Tonight we did a good job of moving the basketball," Davis said. "We had 26 assists, which is what we want to accomplish each game. When we move the ball like we did tonight, we get easy baskets."

Mashburn, the team's leading scorer at 20.2 points per game, missed Thursday's contest with a bruised sternum. But the backcourt of Davis and Wesley led the way and Eddie Robinson filled in capably for Mashburn, scoring 12 points and grabbing eight rebounds.

Davis had 23 points and nine assists and Wesley collected 18 and 10. Center Elden Campbell provided the power inside for the Hornets with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

"It was a team effort tonight," said Hornets coach Paul Silas. "You have to find a way to win no matter who you have, and that's what we did. We moved the ball well, penetrated and kicked it out. Baron and David did an excellent job moving the ball."

Tracy McGrady, who scored 37 points in Wednesday's win over Detroit, led the Magic with 19 points but was just 7-of-22 from the field as Orlando shot 37 percent.

"We got good looks but could not knock down our shots," McGrady said. "Fatigue was definitely a factor for me. I was shooting flat tonight."

Davis scored 10 points in the first quarter, when Charlotte built a 29-20 lead.

The Hornets held a 56-45 halftime advantage and led by as many as 20 points in the third quarter. The Magic pulled no closer than 10 in the final period.

"I thought Charlotte was quicker, fresher, stronger and better," said Magic coach Doc Rivers. "Baron played a good game tonight and I thought he really bothered Darrell (Armstrong). It's not often that you see a guy who is quicker than Darrell, especially someone that is taller than him."

Armstrong finished with 16 points and rookie Mike Miller added 15 for the Magic.

Davis scored on a 20-foot jumper, a layup and a dunk in a 13-3 first-quarter run that opened a 29-18 lead for the Hornets. Troy Hudson closed the period with a pair of free throws for Orlando.

Charlotte opened the second quarter with an 11-2 spurt to increase the lead to 40-22. Wesley nailed a 3-pointer and Robinson dunked before Campbell capped the run with a short jumper with 8:48 left in the half.

A 3-pointer by Miller from the right corner pulled the Magic within 56-45 at intermission.

Charlotte started the third quarter with a 13-4 run to open its biggest lead at 69-49. Campbell highlighted the spurt with a tip-in, a short jumper and a pair of free throws and Davis capped it with a 3-pointer midway through the period.

The Magic responded with a 13-2 run as Pat Garrity hit two jumpers and Miller drilled a 3-pointer. A pair of free throws by Cory Alexander got Orlando within 71-62 with 1:25 left.

But rookie Jamaal Magloire dunked and Hersey Hawkins hit a 15-footer to close the quarter, giving Charlotte a 13-point cushion.
