Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- With All-Star Chris Webber back in the lineup for the Sacramento Kings, the Denver Nuggets would have a tough time even with Antonio McDyess and Nick Van Exel playing.

Webber, playing his third straight game after missing 10 in a row with a sprained ankle, recorded 41 points and 12 rebounds as the Kings won for the fifth time in six games with a 110-104 victory over the undermanned but determined Nuggets.

Former Nugget Bobby Jackson contributed 13 points off the bench for the Kings (41-19), who moved one half-game in front of the Los Angeles Lakers and Portland Trail Blazers for the lead in the Pacific Division.

"We're not going to back down from anybody," Jackson said. "I think with us, we have to come out and be aggressive in the first half, and come out with more energy than we have in the last couple games."

Voshon Lenard scored 24 points and Robert Pack matched season highs with 22 and 13 assists for Denver, which lost its fifth straight game. James Posey contributed 18 points and Raef LaFrentz added 17 and 14 rebounds for the Nuggets.

"One of the good things about tonight's game is that Voshon, Posey and Raef all played much better than they've been playing lately," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "I thought we got an awful good effort considering how shorthanded we were. We still need to win a basketball game, that would certainly be the best elixir right now."

McDyess, who backed up Webber at the All-Star Game, missed his third straight game with a dislocated knee. Van Exel, Denver's starting point guard, has missed the team's last two contests with a bruised knee.

Without McDyess, the 6-10 Webber and 7-1 Vlade Divac gave Sacramento a strong presence inside, as the Kings held a 47-40 advantage on the boards and outscored the Nuggets in the paint, 48-38. Divac made 4-of-5 shots and also handed out six assists in 30 minutes.

"Denver came in and played well," Webber said. "Either you have an incentive to play well because you're in the race or you have nothing to lose, so you play loose. Right now it's a dangerous time to be playing for playoff games, we need to concentrate on every game."

Webber had 41 points and 14 boards on Wednesday when Sacramento rallied from a 28-point second-quarter deficit for a 100-89 victory at Phoenix.

He picked up right where he left off, scoring 18 points in the first half. Peja Stojakovic added 13 of his 24 to help the Kings grab a 55-51 lead at the break.

Stojakovic capped an 8-0 tear with a 21-footer, giving the Kings a 65-54 lead with 8:52 left in the third. Sacramento made 9-of-9 shots in the third and took an 85-73 lead into the final quarter.

The Kings took their biggest lead at 88-73 when Webber made a hook shot with 10:38 to go. LaFrentz capped a 7-1 spurt with a layup to cut the margin to 91-82 with 6:44 left. Sacramento built the lead back up to 99-86 on a layup by Divac with 3:32 remaining, but the Nuggets came back.

Denver made 9-of-16 shots from behind the arc, including a 25-footer by Voshon Lenard that cut the deficit to 100-94 with 1:31 left. Webber responded with two free throws 15 seconds later and after Pack hit a 3-pointer, the Kings went 6-of-8 from the line to close it out.

"To begin we came out shorthanded, and we knew we needed to come out here and pull some extra weight, and we did that tonight," Pack said. "The first half we had to find our way into things we could do to be successful against them. The second half we just came out and gave an all-put effort."
