Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Vince Carter and Keon Clark each scored 13 points in the fourth quarter as the the Toronto Raptors pulled away for a 110-99 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics.

Having lost the first two games of their four-game road trip, the Raptors faced an 87-86 deficit after a Gary Payton hit a jumper with 7:32 remaining. But Carter and Clark took over.

Carter ignited a 24-6 run with a layup to put Toronto ahead, 88-87, with 7:13 to play. The All-Star guard followed with a three-point play 23 seconds later, giving the Raptors a four-point lead.

"Defensively we needed to step our intensity up," Carter said. "We let them come up on us on their defensive end and we ended up having some shot-clock violations. That is uncalled for. We are better than that and we execute better than that. Late in the third and in the fourth quarter we played the basketball that we are capable of playing on both ends."

Seattle got a 3-pointer from Shammond Williams with 6:23 left and after Clark dunked, Payton made 1-of-2 free throws to trim Toronto's lead to 93-91 with 5:46 left. Clark answered with a pair from the line and after Seattle failed to score, Chris Childs hit a long 3-pointer just before the shot clock expired to push the lead to 98-91 with 4:33 left.

"Keon is coming on," Toronto coach Lenny Wilkens said. "He is just playing great basketball. He's been with us a little longer than the other new guys so he knows where to go and he fits in right now. Guys know where he's gonna be."

Carter finished with 32 points and Clark added 20 and eight rebounds in 28 minutes off the bench as Toronto (34-29) moved within percentage points of the Orlando Magic for sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

"He's a helluva player," Seattle forward Ruben Patterson said of Carter. "I made him work for every shot he made tonight. I mean, he even said to me, `Boy, you made me work hard.' He hit a couple of shots on me, but he's a great player. When a guy can take 20 or 30 shots, there ain't much you can do. You know I kind of got worn out in the fourth quarter because I had to chase him off screens."

Charles Oakley had 18 points and 12 rebounds, helping the Raptors to a 42-35 advantage on the boards and their second straight win in Seattle after losing their first three trips there.

Vin Baker scored a season-high 24 points and Payton added 19 for Seattle, which shot 45 percent (37-of-82) and lost for the seventh time in nine games.

"They got some easy baskets and they made some tough shots," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "I thought we missed some assignments on our switches and we started taking quick shots. We started settling for the long ball and not being patient or establishing the low post or getting them into pick-and-rolls. We just really started coming down and started jacking up long bombs."

Baker, who eclipsed 20 points for just the fourth time this season, hit a jumper in the paint to get the Sonics within 99-93. Carter responded with a 14-footer and a 3-pointer before Oakley hit two free throws for a 106-93 lead with 2:13 to go.

Baker scored 18 points in the first half as the Sonics grabbed a 52-51 edge. Seattle used a 7-0 burst to take its biggest lead, 68-57, when Patrick Ewing completed a three-point play with 5:53 left in the third quarter.

Alvin Williams scored five of his 13 points and Oakley added four as Toronto closed the third with a 20-6 run to tie the score, 74-74.
