Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- After back-to-back losses to Charlotte and Milwaukee, the Boston Celtics made quick work of the hapless Washington Wizards.

Antoine Walker scored 24 points and Paul Pierce added 21 as the Celtics jumped to an early lead and cruised to an 104-72 victory that kept them one game behind Indiana in the battle for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

It was the most lopsided win of the season for Boston, surpassing a 103-82 victory over Cleveland on February 4. The Celtics led by as many as 33 in the final minutes.

"We wanted to try to come out and not really make a statement, but we are playing for our playoff lives," Pierce said.

Boston improved to 2-2 on a five-game homestand that concludes Sunday against the league-leading Philadelphia 76ers.

Walker and Pierce continue to carry the team on their shoulders but unlike Wednesday's 101-94 loss to the Bucks, Boston got others involved in the offense early. Six different players scored in the first quarter, led by Walker's 11, helping the Celtics open a 26-18 advantage.

Walker and Pierce combined for 66 points against Milwaukee but the Celtics' other three starters were held without a point.

"We did a better job finding guys and we kept the focus on for most of the game," Pierce said. "Against teams like this, we have to go and dominate."

"I thought that we came out and really played good, solid basketball," Boston coach Jim O'Brien added. "It looks like we learned something in this stretch. It's starting to pay off. Our focus for 48 minutes was good."

Pierce was limited to two points over the first 12 minutes against Washington before erupting for 17 in the second quarter as the Celtics stretched their lead to 58-38 at the break.

Bryant Stith contributed 11 points for the Celtics, while Vitaly Potapenko and Milt Palacio provided a spark off the bench with 11 and 10, respectively.

"Especially with teams keep trapping Paul and Antoine, we have to be able to relieve the pressure," Stith said.

Boston only shot 46 percent (38-of-83) from the field but the Celtics matched their best defensive effort of the season by holding the Wizards to a dismal 28 percent (24-of-83). Mitch Richmond was just 1-of-13 from the field and scored only seven points.

"We realized we made mistakes against teams that aren't good, but we are improving and we showed that," Pierce added.

Richard Hamilton paced Washington with just 12 points. The Wizards have dropped 14 of their last 16 following a season-high five-game winning streak.

"We had an awful shooting night and they seemed to be knocking them in," Hamilton said.

"We just didn't play well," added Wizards forward Christian Laettner, who scored 11 points. "The Celtics are still playing for something this year. They played hard and beat us."

Washington is just 1-18 this season against Atlantic Division opponents, with the win a 109-89 victory over the Celtics on November 18. Since then, the Wizards have lost 14 straight within the division.

The Celtics never trailed as Walker drilled two 3-pointers in a game-opening 10-2 spurt.
