Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Jalen Rose scored 16 of his 35 points in the third quarter and Jermaine O'Neal continued his strong all-around play as the Indiana Pacers snapped a four-game losing streak with a 99-84 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Rose capped his explosive stretch with a 30-footer at the buzzer, giving the Pacers a 77-63 cushion entering the final period. He surpassed 30 points for the first time since registering 31 against Orlando on December 25.

Indiana remained one game ahead of Boston in the race for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

"You got to start somewhere," Rose said. "We talked earlier about having nine games coming up and we felt like if we could win seven of those, we could put ourselves in good shape. Today was the first step and we found a way to get it done."

O'Neal collected 16 points and 15 rebounds and blocked seven shots for the second straight game, again matching a career high. He also had 17 points and 14 rebounds in Wednesday's 79-75 loss to the New York Knicks.

"I've got to give all the credit to my teammates," said O'Neal, who has 33 blocks in his last seven games and needs 17 to set an Indiana single-season record. "They're smothering guys and making guys put the ball up right at the cup."

Indiana coach Isiah Thomas pointed to O'Neal's ability to hit the mid-range jumper as the reason for his recent success.

"It adds a tremendous amount because of his quickness," Thomas said. "Everybody has been playing him to give him that shot. He's stayed after practice and really worked on it."

The Pacers were able to get their transition game going against the Cavaliers, scoring 17 fast break points in the third quarter alone.

"The thing I'm most impressed pleased with is our three young guys -- Jermaine, Jeff (Foster) and Al (Harrington) come up with 15, 11 and seven rebounds," Thomas said.

"We were running up and down the floor," Rose added. "Guys were flying to the offensive boards, diving for loose balls, bringing the kind of energy we're going to need to be a good team."

Pacers guard Reggie Miller returned from a one-game suspension for throwing gum at an official in Tuesday's game at New York and scored 18 points.

Cleveland used a 7-0 spurt to close to 91-82 on Matt Harpring's layup with 2:35 left, but Austin Croshere ended the Cavaliers' momentum with a 3-pointer that pushed the lead back into double figures with 2:11 to play.

Rookie Chris Mihm and Andre Miller scored 15 points apiece for the reeling Cavaliers, who have dropped seven straight games and 19 of 21.

"Tonight, we had two good spurts in the second and third quarter but we struggled to score points," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "It's a loss but it's a positive one. We have to take care of the ball and hit shots."

Indiana shot 48 percent (38-of-79) from the field while holding Cleveland to 41 percent (34-of-83).

"We knew we were under fire tonight and we really had to turn it up and do a good job," Foster said. "I think tonight was the beginning. We can't let up."

After nine ties and 11 lead changes, Rose hit two foul shots to give the Pacers the lead for good, 59-57, with 4:44 left in the third quarter. Indiana closed the period with an 18-6 run.

Rose, who also handed out seven assists, scored 14 points during the decisive run.

"I was just trying to be aggressive," he said. "A lot of times when they put Travis (Best) in the game, that means I move to the wing. When I move to the wing, it's really an opportunity for me to try to score the ball."
