Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- The Houston Rockets had the Golden State Warriors in unfamiliar territory -- a close game in the fourth quarter.

The surging Rockets held on for their third straight win, an 86-81 victory over the mistake-prone Warriors, who lost their sixth straight game.

Steve Francis scored 24 points for the Rockets (35-28), who have won 13 of their last 16 to move within two games of Minnesota for the final playoff berth in the Western Conference.

"It's good to get back into the playoff hunt," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "It's been shaky at times, but we've set the table."

But the Rockets would not have won without some help from Golden State. The Warriors had lost their last five games by a combined 108 points and none of them was close. However, Golden State found itself down just 66-61 entering the final period of this one.

But in the fourth quarter, the Warriors committed six turnovers to undermine their rally. They still had a chance to tie, but Vonteego Cummings took a long 3-pointer that barely hit the rim.

"I thought our guys played a very good ballgame," Warriors coach Dave Cowens said. "We matched them stat for stat. We had a nice defensive effort, but we turned the ball over too much to win."

Moochie Norris scored nine of his 11 points in the final period for Houston. Cuttino Mobley had 12 points and Carlos Rogers added 11 of the bench as the Rockets won without injured center Hakeem Olajuwon.

"We came up with big plays in the fourth quarter," Tomjanovich said. "Moochie Norris was fantastic, we got big offensive rebounds and second-chance points to pull out the game."

"When I come off the bench, I've got to bring positive energy," Norris said. "I've been trying to get more shots. When the double-teams come to either Cuttino or Steve, that usually means that I'm open and I've got to knock down those shots."

Antawn Jamison scored 34 points for the Warriors, who have lost 20 of their last 22 games, beating only the Los Angeles Clippers and Chicago during that span.

"This is another game where we put ourselves in a position to win and just didn't get it done," Jamison said. "Our defensive effort was really great, but we had too many turnovers that hurt us in key situations."

The Warriors were within 79-73 with 4:18 remaining and made three straight stops, only to see Adonal Foyle throw away two passes and rookie Chris Porter fumble another out of bounds.

Mobley's free throws made it 82-75 with 2:01 left, but Jamison scored six straight points, cutting the deficit to 82-81 with 29 seconds left.

"I was concerned," Francis said. "I felt it slipping away and we can't afford that. It was imperative that we won this game and I'm thankful that we pulled it out."

Francis drew a foul on a missed corner jumper with 9.5 seconds to go and made both free throws for an 84-81 lead, setting up Golden State's last chance.

The Warriors were just 1-of-8 from the arc to that point and that one came from Bob Sura, who had missed 21 of his last 22 3-pointers. Cowens went to Cummings, who did not come through.

"Vonteego was the guy we wanted to shoot," Cowens said. "Nobody shoots a three very well for us, so we ran a pick-and-roll with him and Antawn. He got a pretty good look, it just didn't go."

"We had an opportunity to tie it up and I got a great look at the basket," Cummings added. "I just blew it."

Francis sealed it with two free throws and the Rockets took the season series, 3-1.

Shandon Anderson scored 10 points for the Rockets, who shot 42 percent (33-of-78) from the field, including 4-of-19 from the arc.

Porter scored 11 points and Foyle added 10 for the Warriors, who shot 39.5 percent (32-of-81). Both teams had 20 turnovers.

Jamison scored 14 points in the first half as Golden State took a 46-44 lead. Houston wnet ahead for good at 64-61 on a 3-pointer by Mobley with 1:36 left in the third quarter.
