Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers looked like just another team without their two stars.

With Shaquille O'Neal having fouled out and Kobe Bryant unavailable, the Seattle SuperSonics used an 18-0 run bridging the fourth quarter and overtime for its fourth victory over the Lakers this season, 109-97.

Gary Payton scored 24 points as Seattle swept the season series for just the second time and first since going 5-0 in the 1993-94 season.

"Who would think that we would sweep the Lakers," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "I think it's a match-up thing. We played hard enough, we played smart enough and made decisions to win those games."

The Lakers played the final 5:32 of regulation and the overtime without Bryant and O'Neal. Bryant did not attend the game due to a viral infection and O'Neal fouled out with 5:32 to play and Los Angeles ahead, 84-80.

"The officials did a horrible job," O'Neal said. "I don't care (about being fined). They stunk tonight. I can't be controlled by money. They can take it if they want. I have never had four offensive fouls called on me before. Guys were out there flopping, not following the rules."

A layup by Horace Grant gave Los Angeles a 93-86 lead with 1:36 left in regulation before Seattle rallied. Rashard Lewis made a 3-pointer with 52 seconds to play and Payton had a basket with 28 seconds to go.

Lewis was fouled with six seconds left and missed both free throws but rookie Desmond Mason -- the NBA Slam Dunk champion -- soared above the Lakers' Mark Madsen and hammered home the second miss to knot the score at 93-93 with 4.5 seconds to go.

"(Assistant Bob) Weiss talked to me about putting Mason in," McMillan said. "We've seen him come come close to making that play several times and when Rashard Lewis missed that first free throw, we put Desmond in just to see if he could make that play. It was just an unbelieveable call by coach Weiss."

"I've tried a bunch of those throughout the season and missed them," Mason said. "I've been missing a lot of tip dunks but I made one at the right time. The guy missed the block and I just crashed the boards and hpoed it came off, which it did."

A 3-pointer by Lewis 27 seconds into overtime gave Seattle a 96-93 lead and Payton added four points as the SuperSonics opened a 104-93 lead with 64 seconds to play. Los Angeles resorted to off-balance 3-pointers as its famed triangle offense looked completely disoriented without Bryant and O'Neal.

"We lost our penetration out there and they did a good job of switching all all our crosses," Jackson said. "Our guys settled for 3-pointers."

Lewis scored 21 points and Brent Barry added 20 for Seattle, which snapped a four-game losing streak. The SuperSonics also got 14 points from Mason, including his emphatic game-tying basket.

O'Neal led Los Angeles with 29 points while Rick Fox added 11. The Lakers dropped consecutive games at home for the first time this season.

Los Angeles finished the game with just six available players. Isaiah Rider was out serving his five-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse program and Robert Horry was ejected with just under nine minutes left in the first half. Grant fouled out with under a minute left in the overtime.

"Rob didn't play the game right, especially with us down people," Jackson said. "Playing three minutes and getting thrown out of the ball game, that hurt us."

Brian Shaw added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Los Angeles, which has suffered both of its last two losses in overtime.

The Lakers opened up a 41-31 lead with 9:23 left before halftime on a 3-pointer by Mike Penberthy. Seattle then scored 18 of the next 23 points for a 49-46 lead with 2:27 to go.

The Sonics led, 55-52, at halftime.
