Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- If the Charlotte Hornets are going to make a move in the Eastern Conference, this is the time.

In the second of a series of games against weak teams, the Hornets dispatched the Vancouver Grizzlies, 100-95, for their fourth straight victory.

Jamal Mashburn scored 23 points and David Wesley added 20 for the Hornets, who had six players in double figures as they held on against the pesky Grizzlies.

Charlotte moved within two games of first-place Milwaukee in the Central Division and remained one-half game behind Miami and New York for fourth place in the East. The top four teams get home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

"I don't think about other teams," Wesley said. "If Milwaukee, Orlando and New York lose, we can catch them if we win these games."

After beating Milwaukee on Saturday, Charlotte had a schedule that saw five of its next six games against some of the worst teams in the NBA. The Hornets defeated Chicago on Monday and the stretch continues with games against Cleveland, Washington, Toronto and Chicago again.

"Good teams are those who come out and win these games," said guard Baron Davis, who had 14 points and nine assists. "It's good to separate from the pack. If we could win our upcoming games, we ought to be in good shape."

"We have to take advantage of being at home against teams that are not going to the playoffs," added forward P.J. Brown, who grabbed nine rebounds. "These teams are still dangerous, so we have to keep playing hard and tough and keep playing well like tonight."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 23 points and 12 rebounds for Vancouver, which has lost three in a row and nine of 12. After claiming their first victory over the Hornets earlier this season, the Grizzlies fell to 1-9 in the all-time series.

"Our defense wasn't all that bad; they just hit shots with hands in their face," Vancouver coach Sidney Lowe said. "Mashburn and Wesley are tough shooters."

Mashburn scored 10 points in the second quarter, including a pair of free throws that triggered a 12-5 closing burst and gave the Hornets a 58-52 halftime lead.

"We have to keep coming out with energy," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "When we don't, we struggle with anybody we play."

The Grizzlies tied it, 66-66, on a jumper by Mike Bibby with 4:04 remaining in the third quarter. Mashburn responded with a three-point play and the Hornets rebuilt the advantage to 74-68 entering the final period.

Mashburn made three straight jumpers to open the fourth quarter and give Charlotte an 80-70 lead with 9:13 to go. He scored 10 points in the period and made sure Vancouver got no closer than the final margin.

"Jamal stepped up and hit some tough contested shots," said Abdur-Rahim. "There is not much more you can do when Jamal is in the zone."

Eddie Robinson scored 12 points and fellow reserve Jamaal Magloire added 11 for the Hornets, who shot 45 percent (38-of-84) from the field and committed just nine turnovers.

Bibby had 22 points and 11 assists and Michael Dickerson added 20 and 10 for the Grizzlies, who shot 48 percent (39-of-82) but committed 18 turnovers.
