Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Who needs Michael Jordan when you have Richard Hamilton?

With rumours swirling that "His Airness" may leave his position as president of the Washington Wizards to join the team on the court next season, Hamilton poured in a career-high 40 points in a 103-96 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

Hamilton made 15-of-23 shots from the floor in a Jordanesque performance and was virtually unstoppable in leading Washington to its third win in its last four games.

"I just felt good," Hamilton said. "The guys gave me a whole lot of wide-open shots and I just took advantage of it. Sometimes you honestly think every shot's going to go in, and that's how I feel sometimes. I felt just like I feel any other game."

Hamilton exploded in the first half with 24 points, including 11 during a 19-9 second-quarter run that powered Washington to a 50-39 halftime lead.

The Wizards were outplayed in the first 16 minutes of until the second-year guard gave them their first lead, 31-30, when he sank a 14-foot jumper with 7:38 to go in the second quarter.

Neither team scored until former Piston Christian Laettner extended the lead with a breakaway dunk almost two minutes later.

After rookie Courtney Alexander made a long jumper, Hamilton scored Washington's next five points and collected an assist on a 3-pointer by Laron Profit that ballooned the lead to double digits.

"(Hamilton) shot well tonight," Detroit's Jerry Stackhouse said. "He got into a comfort zone. We seem to be the team that guys step up and find their comfort. Tonight he did."

The Wizards controlled the remainder of the game until Detroit made its only run late in the fourth quarter and closed within seven with 1:56 to go. Stackhouse, who scored 38 points, led the charge for the Pistons, but Hamilton sank two free throws and Alexander score four of his 15 points in the final minute to seal the victory.

Hubert Davis also scored 15 points and Laettner added 12 and eight rebounds for the Wizards, which held a huge 53-31 edge on the boards.

Washington center Jahidi White injured his ankle early in the first quarter and left the game but returned to tie his career high with 16 rebounds. Forward Michael Smith pulled down 14.

The Wizards' offense was nearly flawless. They shot 53 percent (38-of-72) from the floor and drained 5-of-9 from the arc, which allowed them to overcome 22 turnovers.

Washington also won its first game this season without veteran guard Mitch Richmond, who sat out with a strained right knee.

"It's a confidence booster," Alexander said. "Mitch has definitely carved his place in history in this league, but for us to go out and play the kind of basketball we've played these last couple of games is definitely a positive thing."

Detroit committed just 11 turnovers but shot just 41 percent (37-of-89).

Corliss Williamson scored 16 points and Ben Wallace had 12, 13 rebounds and five blocks for the Pistons, which had a two-game winning streak snapped.
