Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Steve Francis went down, but fellow guards Cuttino Mobley and Moochie Norris stepped up as the Houston Rockets continued their home dominance over the New Jersey Nets with a 108-106 victory.

Mobley had 30 points, a career-high 11 assists and six rebounds and Norris added 17 points and matched a career best with eight boards as the Rockets posted their 10th straight home win over the Nets.

Maurice Taylor scored 25 points, including a jumper from the left wing that put Houston ahead for good, 105-104, with 1:07 remaining.

New Jersey, trying to win in Houston for the first time since December 8, 1989, had a chance to regain the lead. But Johnny Newman stepped on the baseline as he bumped into Taylor while driving to the basket.

"This was a disappointing loss," Newman said. "Our guys came to compete every second they were in the game. We played well. A bounce here on a bounce there and we could have won."

Norris, who scored 11 of his career-high 28 points in the third overtime in Tuesday's 127-118 victory over Indiana, sank a jumper from the left baseline to give the Rockets a 107-104 advantage.

"Moochie is sky-high and made another clutch play for us near the end," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said.

"We are trying to maintain our confidence," Norris said. "Every game is important. We are believing in one another as a team. This was definitely a big win. We're just trying to do whatever we can to get the win. Every single game is important so no matter who we play, it is going to be big. Right now we are trying to switch things around and get wins at home and we will try to steal some on the road."

Aaron Williams hit a jumper from the left wing to pull the Nets within 107-106 with 27.3 seconds to play. But Norris drove the lane, drew a foul and made 1-of-2 free throws to give Houston a 108-106 edge with 5.8 seconds left.

New Jersey called timeout to set a final play, but Stephon Marbury's driving layup bounced off the rim. The 6-1 Norris boxed out the 6-9 Williams, allowing Mobley to grab the rebound.

"It was a real good look, but didn't go down," Marbury said. "I didn't get tired physically at the end, but my shots just didn't fall. I just had a lot of open looks and opportunities to get to the basket. My shot hasn't been falling as of late."

Francis, last season's co-Rookie of the Year, sat out the fourth quarter with a sore right knee and finished with seven points and five assists in 26 minutes.

"It feels all right. I bumped knees with Stephon," Francis said. "It aggravated a knee injury. Keith (Van Horn) told me I should come out of the game. I tried to come back in the second half, but I couldn't run. I'm glad we got the win. I've got two days to rest before Saturday."

Houston shot 56 percent (42-of-75) and moved within one game of Minnesota for the final Western Conference playoff spot. The Rockets (37-29) have won 15 of their last 19 overall and are a season-high eight games over .500.

Marbury had 34 points and nine assists and Van Horn added 21 points and six rebounds as New Jersey lost for the 14th time in its last 15 road games.

The Nets shot 54 percent (44-of-82), but fell to 0-3 on their five-game trip.

Van Horn, who made 9-of-15 shots, hit a seven-footer to cap a 7-0 burst and give New Jersey a 100-94 lead with 5:31 left. Each team missed shots on their next two possessions before Mobley hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 100-97 with 3:55 remaining.

Marbury missed a jumper and Taylor made two free throws to pull the Rockets within 100-99 with 3:23 left. Marbury and Norris each failed to make layups before Williams tipped in Van Horn's miss to give New Jersey a 102-99 lead with 2:29 remaining. Taylor responded with a 21-footer with 2:12 to go. Shandon Anderson then blocked Van Horn's jumper and Taylor grabbed the ball before getting fouled and making the go-ahead baskets.

Mobley scored 14 points in the first half when Houston took a 56-45 lead.

The Nets opened the third quarter with a 15-3 run, taking a 60-59 lead on a driving layup by Newman with 9:29 left. Norris scored five points in a 13-1 surge that gave the Rockets an 80-72 advantage on Anderson's layup with 2:07 left.

Houston took an 85-78 lead into the fourth.
