Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Paul Pierce's career-high 42 points were not enough on Tuesday, so he duplicated the feat on Thursday as the Boston Celtics ended a six-game road losing streak with a 105-101 win over the Phoenix Suns.

Pierce made 13-of-25 shots from the floor and was 13-of-13 from the line, helping Boston move percentage points ahead of Indiana for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot. On Tuesday he made 13-of-19 shots, but the Celtics were defeated, 112-107, by the Los Angeles Lakers. He also scored 42 points in a win at Minnesota on January 15.

"I had to concentrate tonight on my free throws," said Pierce, who was 13-of-21 from the line at Los Angeles. "Tonight it paid off. I'm feeling good. Every game is a big game for us. I've got to step up for this team. We're trying to win and we're trying to get to that No. 8 spot. I was sort of in a groove. My team was finding me and I felt that the whole game every shot I took would fall in. It felt good."

Pierce scored 23 points in the first half, when the Celitcs shot 54 percent (21-of-39) and built a 53-50 lead. He had seven points as Boston started the third quarter with a 13-0 tear and pushed the advantage to 66-50 on two free throws by rookie Mark Blount with 7:13 remaining.

Antoine Walker had 20 points, six rebounds and six assists for Boston, which won in Phoenix for the first time since February 21, 1995. Bryant Stith scored 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting as the Celtics improved to 11-14 against the Western Conference.

"The Laker game really hurt us, so we came in here really focused," Walker said. "They jumped at us early, but we're used to that happening. We are riding Paul's wave. He's playing great this trip and he's doing every little thing to win games."

Boston scored 23 points off 25 turnovers by Phoenix.

"Our turnovers were not good," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "We have those nights where we turn the ball over a lot. I think anyone who saw this game, though, can see the difference in the effort we played with in the fourth quarter as opposed to the rest of the game. That was the key; we just didn't have it tonight."

Jason Kidd totaled 31 points, nine assists and seven rebounds for Phoenix, which was swept by Boston for the first time since the 1987-88 season. Shawn Marion had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Suns, who made 7-of-12 3-pointers but missed their first 10 shots in the third period.

The Suns trailed by as many as 18 points in the third quarter and faced a 78-68 deficit at the start of the fourth. They closed within 100-94 when Kidd made two free throws with 1:26 left, but Pierce hit an 18-footer from the left wing 36 seconds later.

Marion made a 3-pointer to pull the Suns within 102-97 with 44 seconds left. Cliff Robinson blocked Milt Palacio's layup and Kidd made two foul shots to trim the margin to 102-99 with 24 seconds left. Palacio responded with two from the line, then tied up Robinson to prevent Phoenix from getting a shot.

Kidd scored 18 points in the first quarter, when the Suns raced to a 32-26 lead.

The Suns took their biggest lead with 8:13 left in the second period on a seven-footer by Robinson with 8:13 left. Walker answered with a 3-pointer before Tony Delk's layup gave the Phoenix a 44-31 advantage with 6:58 left.

Randy Brown made a 17-footer to trigger a 14-0 run. Pierce scored eight points in the burst that Walker capped with a jumper for a 45-44 lead with 3:19 left.

"Our press really hurt them in the second quarter," Boston coach Jim O'Brien said. "We turned them over 25 times, which is a big number for us. As a whole, our team shot the basketball very well tonight. I thought Milt had some great drives, got up and knocked down some critical foul shots."

Rodney Rogers, who scored 11 points off the bench, hit a 14-footer to give the Suns their last lead, 46-45, with 3:01 left before halftime. Pierce hit a 19-footer 12 seconds later and added a layup to give the Celtics a 49-46 edge.
