Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Steve Francis scored 30 points, including the clinching free throws, as the Houston Rockets ended an 11-game losing streak to the San Antonio Spurs with a 103-99 victory.

In a back-and-forth game, the Spurs wasted a 20-point lead and had their season-high nine-game winning streak snapped.

The Rockets took their largest lead at 99-89 on a 3-pointer by Francis with 3:35 to play. But the Spurs scored eight straight points, including four by Tim Duncan, to cut the deficit to 99-97 with 63 seconds left.

Mobley nailed an 11-footer with 43 seconds to play to restore Houston's four-point lead but Terry Porter answered with two free throws 10 seconds later.

The Rockets ran down the shot clock before Mobley missed a long 3-pointer with 12 seconds left. Francis grabbed the rebound, was fouled and made two free throws with nine seconds left to seal the victory.

Mobley scored 26 points with 10 rebounds and Matt Bullard matched a season-high with 18 points off the bench for Houston, which also snapped a five-game home skid to San Antonio.

"Bullard made some great shots and that forced them to cover on the perimeter," Tomjonovich said. "That opens some seams for us and that changed the game."

"It felt great to be out there," Bullard said. "I've been working out and my jumper's been feeling really good."

Houston connected on 10-of-17 from beyond the arc, including 6-of-7 by Bullard. The Rockets also made 21-of-25 free throws and scored a season-high 68 points in the second half.

"I wanted this game too badly," Mobley said. "They have escaped us too many times. Bullard was tremendous. He broke their back with those threes and sparked us big time. We're doing so well as a team that I'm ready for the playoffs."

"Houston got hot and made a lot of shots," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "You have to give Matt credit. He made six threes and I thought we did as good a job on Cuttino and Steve as we could, but we didn't plan on Bullard's threes. Our defense sagged in the second half and it let Houston back in the game."

Houston extended its home winning streak to five games and moved within a half-game of idle Minnesota for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Duncan had 25 points and 16 rebounds for San Antonio. David Robinson added 22 points and Avery Johnson chipped in 14.

"You have to give Houston a tremendous amount of credit," Robinson said. "I can't remember in recent times when a team has played that well against us. (They made) all the shots they threw up. It was a great performance and it's hard to hang your head when a team shoots the ball as well as they did."

The Rockets fought back after trailing, 48-28, with 1:33 left in the first half. Bullard made a 3-pointer and Francis had a basket to cut the halftime deficit to 48-33.

The Spurs maintained a double-digit lead for most of the third quarter and Robinson's basket gave San Antonio a 65-53 lead with just over four minutes left.

But Houston utilized strong outside shooting in a 17-4 run for a 70-69 lead with 40 seconds left. Francis had eight points and Bullard made a pair of 3-pointers during the spurt. A jumper by Robinson gave the Spurs a 71-70 lead heading into the fourth.

San Antonio saw its lead in the Midwest Division sliced to one game over Utah.
