Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Jason Terry scored 36 points as the Atlanta Hawks ended the Los Angeles Lakers' four-game winning streak with a 108-106 victory.

A 3-pointer by Rick Fox gave Los Angeles its last lead at 102-100 with 2 1/2 minutes remaining. The Hawks responded with seven straight points, capped by Toni Kukoc's 3-pointer for a 107-102 lead with 56 seconds to go.

After baskets by Kobe Bryant and Fox pulled the Lakers within 107-106, Terry made one of two free throws with 6.3 seconds left. Los Angeles went to Bryant, who missed from just inside the 3-point line with two seconds left, and time expired on the rebound.

"So many guys stepped up and made big plays at critical times," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "(We) just kept fighting away and got a result that picks everyone up."

"I had a good look at it," Bryant said of his last shot. "I was a little off-balance, but I had a good look."

Kukoc finished with 26 points for Atlanta, which recorded its first home win over the Lakers since an 86-75 triumph on February 28, 1997.

"Jason, of course, again a terrific night," Kruger said. "Toni was making big plays. You can go down the list a long way and feel good about the contributions of a lot of guys."

Alan Henderson made 5-of-8 shopts for 15 points while rookie Hanno Mottola added 10 of the bench. The Hawks made 9-of-19 3-pointers, with Terry drilling five and Kukoc four.

"Everybody came out and played hard," Terry said. "We won the loose ball battle tonight and that's something we haven't been doing."

Atlanta took its largest lead at 100-94 on a jumper by Brevin Knight. The Lakers scored the next eight points, capped by a dunk and 3-pointer by Fox, to set up the frantic finish.

Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal each scored 27 points for the Lakers, who dropped into a first-place tie with Sacramento in the Pacific Division. Los Angeles held a 48-27 rebounding edge as O'Neal grabbed 13 and Bryant 12.

"We got beat tonight by a better team," Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson said. "They outhustled us and they were game to the challenge."

Fox had 17 points and Derek Fisher added 16 as all five Lakers' starters scored in double figures. Los Angeles shot 50 percent (39-of-78) and had 17 offensive rebounds.

"It's our first loss to a team like this," O'Neal said. "They had a lot of energy. We're supposed to beat teams like this all the time."

O'Neal made 9-of-19 shots and a surprising 9-of-12 at the free-throw line. Bryant shot 10-of-22 despite being hampered by a sore ankle.

"Frustration has nothing to do with the game," Bryant said. "It has everything to do with my limitations on the basketball court. I felt limited tonight -- I am seeing gaps but not being able to get there. It's something I have to learn to get through."

Los Angeles fell to 9-8 in the second of back-to-back games. Its five-game road trip concludes on Wednesday in Milwaukee.

"Tonight is our fourth game in five nights," Jackson said. "As a coach, you have to understand that and deal with it."

Atlanta won for the first time in 17 games when allowing at least 100 points.
