Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- For three quarters, the Detroit Pistons played as if they were good enough to beat the Utah Jazz at home. In the final quarter, they showed they are not.

Detroit made just 5-of-29 shots in the final quarter, allowing the Jazz to rally from a nine-point deficit for an 84-79 victory.

"We got into the fourth quarter and somebody has to knock down some shots," Detroit coach George Irvine said. "We got the same shots we had the whole game and then in the fourth we didn't execute."

The Jazz shot just 38 percent (30-of-78) but made 7-of-17 shots from the floor and drained three of their five 3-pointers in the final 12 minutes. They pulled within one-half game of idle San Antonio for the top spot in the Western Conference.

"Everyone had their hand in something in the fourth quarter," Utah forward Karl Malone said. "We didn't shoot the ball at all well tonight, but down the stretch we made some defensive plays."

John Stockton scored 14 points and Byron Russell added 10 and eight rebounds for Utah. Both hit big 3-pointers in the final period.

Utah erased a 70-61 deficit with 11 straight points and claimed its first lead since early in the third period on a 3-pointer from Stockton with 6:16 to go.

"I swear (Stockton) could score 23-24 points a game if he wanted to," Irvine said. "They wouldn't be as good a team as they are but he could and that's what being a winner is all about."

Russell nailed a 3-pointer to give the Jazz their biggest lead, 80-74, with 2:53 remaining.

Detroit hung tough. Center Ben Wallace, who had attempted only two 3-pointers all year, drained one with 49 seconds left to put the Pistons within striking distance. That was when they displayed their inexperience in clutch situations against good teams.

The one thing they could not do was commit a foul but that was exactly what they did. Jerry Stackhouse was called for a foul with 12 seconds left and Malone sealed Utah's victory with two free throws.

"We were just jostling for position and there was some pushing and shoving going on and they called the foul," said Wallace, who was also involved in the play. "That's just the way the cookie crumbles."

Malone flirted with a triple-double with 13 points, nine rebounds and eight assists and Donyell Marshall added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Jazz. The forward duo combined to make just 7-of-27 shots but sank 11-of-12 free throws, including the final four.

Detroit shot 34 percent (31-of-91) and made just 11-of-16 foul shots.

"I thought we played great defensively," Irvine said. "But you don't win many games in this league shooting 34 percent."

Stackhouse scored 20 points, Chucky Atkins added 17 and Joe Smith 11 and 12 rebounds for the Pistons, who have lost four of their last five games.
