Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Orlando Magic don't need Tracy McGrady when they get a McGradyesque performance from a different player each quarter.

On a night when their All-Star swingman struggled, three other players stepped up to lead the Magic to a 103-95 victory over the woeful Chicago Bulls.

Darrell Armstrong put the final touches on the team effort, scoring six of his nine fourth-quarter points during a 14-5 run Orlando used to break the game's final tie and roll to victory.

Chicago scored eight of the first 11 points in the fourth quarter to tie the game, 81-81, with 9:25 to go. But Orlando rookie Mike Miller broke the tie with a 3-pointer to spark the decisive run.

Rookie Marcus Fizer followed with a short hook shot for Chicago but was given a technical foul for taunting and Armstrong made the reulting free throw and a layup on the ensuing possession. Pat Garrity followed with another 3-pointer to put the Magic ahead, 90-83, with 6:24 to go.

The Bulls closed within four until Orlando's Bo Outlaw sank a layup and Armstrong made three consecutive free throws -- including another technical -- to seal the victory.

Chicago's second technical was a result of Ron Mercer incessantly arguing with the officials until they penalized him.

"They were not great T's," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "Marcus Fizer was out of line. Ron Mercer was just hoping to get a free throw or two. We did not get a whole lot after that."

Armstrong, who finished with 17 points and 13 assists, followed Orlando's pattern of having a different player spark the offense in each quarter. Andrew DeClercq made 5-of-5 shots and scored all 11 of his points in the first period as the Magic got off to a hot start.

Monty Williams collected 14 of his season-high 22 points in the second quarter, when Orlando took control.

"(The Bulls) didn't pay a lot of attention to me until I got on a roll," Williams said. "That happens to teams when they focus on our big guns and forget about guys like me who come off the bench."

Orlando's offense sputtered in the third period and let Chicago back into it until Armstrong got hot and put away the game.

"We didn't play the brightest game but got a win," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "It's a great sign for us if we can win when Tracy has a bad game like tonight."

McGrady scored just 12 points on 5-of-16 shooting. He did have 11 rebounds, seven assists and four blocked shots.

"I don't know what happenned to him," Rivers said. "He just seemed slow. I said to him `Damn, you are human.'"

"I was just off," McGrady admitted. "I tried to get something going with either rebounds or assists. I had a bad shooting night, but I can get other players involved by doing the little things."

The Bulls shot 47 percent (36-of-77) without leading scorer Elton Brand, who sat out with tendinitis in his left knee.

Chicago's Fred Hoiberg scored 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-4 from the arc. Mercer had 18 points and 10 assists against his former team and Fizer also added 18 points for the Bulls, who have lost seven in a row.
