Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- In a battle of woeful teams, Richard Hamilton scored 28 points to rally the Washington Wizards to a 99-94 victory over the Golden State Warriors, who have lost 11 straight games.

Hamilton scored seven fourth-quarter points, including a pair of free throws with 2.4 seconds remaining to seal the win for the Wizards, who ended a three-game slide.

"I think the Warriors really wanted to win," Hamilton said. "They didn't come out half-stepping. Just like when we come out, you want to win every game. It was a tough game. We both fought hard to get the win."

After Washington's Jahidi White split a pair from the line to knot the game at 87-87, Hamilton converted a three-point play to put the Wizards ahead for good with 3:20 to play.

"Obviously, when you're in the position that we're in, trying to to fight to finish on a respectable note, each victory becomes more and more important and each game becomes more important," Washington coach Leonard Hamilton said.

A free throw by Vonteego Cummings with 30 seconds left pulled the Warriors within 97-94. After Richard Hamilton misfired on an 18-footer and following a timeout, Cummings missed a potential tying 3-pointer with five seconds to go.

"I felt comfortable taking that shot and I shoot them all the time," Cummings said. "I thought I had a good look and it went in and came out and just didn't go down, but I'll take that shot again tomorrow.

"We looked forward to coming to play tonight and we thought this was one that we could get, but we came up short because we couldn't make our shots down the stretch."

Antawn Jamison led four Warriors in double figures with 23 points but was held scoreless in the final quarter. Mookie Blaylock added 16 and 14 assists for Golden State, which shot 47 percent (38-of-81) from the field.

"It's been going on all season," Jamison said. "We've got less than 15 games to go and we still can't solve that problem. We did a good job for three quarters and then in the last four or five minutes, we just get brainlock.

"If I knew what was the problem, I would give you the answer. It's frustrating that it has continued to go on as long as it has. But hopefully, we can solve it by the end of the season."

After trailing most of the game, Washington scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to take their first lead at 79-78 with 9:15 to play.

Courtney Alexander scored a career-high 26 points on 10-of-20 shooting and had six steals off the bench for the Wizards. Hubert Davis helped Washington shoot 75 percent from behind the arc, making 5-of-6 3-pointers and finishing with 21 points.

"This win didn't do anything for the standings, obviously," Alexander said. "But right now, we're playing for pride and morale."

The Wizards, who won for just the fifth time in 22 games, dished out just 19 assists and improved to 7-24 without injured guard Mitch Richmond.

Cummings chipped in 17 points and rookie Chris Porter had 11 and seven rebounds for Golden State, whose starting backcourt was outscored, 49-27. The Warriors shot just 30 percent (6-of-20) in the fourth quarter, when they were outscored, 25-16.
