Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd scored 12 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, including consecutive 3-pointers that hurt the playoff chances of the Seattle SuperSonics and helped the Phoenix Suns to a 91-88 victory.

Coming off three straight games with at least 30 points, Kidd made just 3-of-12 shots over the first three quarters. But he nailed a 3-pointer from the right sideline to pull the Suns within 82-80 with 5:11 remaining.

"We just kept our composure and worked our way back into the ballgame," Kidd said. "I couldn't make a layup and I was banking in a free throw, that's the type of night I had. I just have to be aggressive. The only way you're going to make shots is by taking them and hopefully it helps the team. I think that guys are going to get more open shots if I stay aggressive."

After Ruben Patterson missed a layup, Kidd hit a 25-footer from the left sideline to put Phoenix up for good with 4:33 left.

"I made some big shots," Kidd added. "I enjoy that. If I would've been 0-for-10 going into the fourth quarter I still had to look to score."

Vin Baker committed an offensive foul on Seattle's next possession and Cliff Robinson drilled a 17-footer, pushing Phoenix's lead to 85-82 with 3:33 to play. The basket gave Robinson 15,000 career points.

Kidd also pulled down nine rebounds and dished out seven assists, while Shawn Marion had 20 points and 13 boards as Phoenix won for the fourth time in six games.

The Suns shot just 37 percent (31-of-83), but scored 24 points off 15 Seattle turnovers. Phoenix moved one half-game in front of the Minnesota Timberwolves for seventh place in the Western Conference.

"I'm really proud of the team tonight," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "It was far from a pretty game. They had some moments in the first half, but there were a lot of missed shots. We just kept grinding it out."

Baker had 19 points and 12 rebounds in 31 minutes off the bench and Gary Payton added 18 points and eight assists for Seattle, which had its season-high six-game winning streak stopped and fell 4 1/2 games out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the West.

Baker went 13-of-13 from the free-throw line, including a pair that gave Seattle an 80-71 lead with 8:05 left. Marion answered with two free throws 55 seconds later before Payton hit a layup, giving Seattle an 82-73 lead with 6:58 remaining. Marion then hit an 18-footer with 6:41 left to trigger a 14-0 run. After three missed shots by Seattle, Tony Delk made a layup to cut the deficit to 82-77 with 6:04 left.

"That was a big win to come from behind and come up here and not only break their streak, but keep ours going at two," said Delk, who had 15 points off the bench. "We have a tough game tomorrow (Philadelphia) and we really have to get ready for tomorrow."

Marion followed Kidd's second 3-pointer with a dunk, capping the run and giving the Suns an 87-82 lead with 3:01 to go. Baker, who made just 3-of-14 shots from the floor, tipped in a shot to pull the Sonics within 87-84 with 2:02 left. Kidd made a pair of free throws with 1:25 left and 10 seconds later Payton's basket trimmed Phoenix's lead to 89-86.

Seattle had a chance to tie the score, but rookie Desmond Mason turned the ball over with 48 seconds remaining. The Suns failed to increase the lead when Tom Gugliotta missed a 14-footer with 30 seconds left. After Rashard Lewis missed a 3-pointer, Baker grabbed the rebound and made two free throws to cut the deficit to 89-88 with 14.3 seconds left.

Kidd made 1-of-2 from the line to make it 90-88 with 12 seconds left and Marion blocked a layup by Mason that would have tied the score. Delk made 1-of-2 free throws with with seven seconds to play and Baker's 3-pointer from the top of the arc bounced off the back rim as time expired.

"I thought it was open, but you know he might've gotten a little anxious and tried to get it quickly, but you know Marion made a good play by not giving up and coming up with the block," said Seattle coach Nate McMillan about Mason's attempted layup.

Lewis scored nine of his 14 points in the first half when the Sonics built a 50-38 lead.

Phoenix opened the third with a 16-4 run to close within 58-54 when Rodney Rogers hit a 3-pointer with 5:25 left. Payton answered with a 3-pointer 25 seconds later, but Phoenix pulled within 61-58 when Kidd made two free throws with 4:07 left.

Seattle took a 71-64 lead into the fourth.
