Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- For the Seattle SuperSonics and Houston Rockets, who need as many wins as possible to keep their postseason hopes alive, the playoffs already have begun.

Ruben Patterson scored the go-ahead basket, blocked a shot by Steve Francis and dribbled in for the clinching basket in the final 12 seconds to give the SuperSonics a 93-90 victory over the Rockets and continue their push for the Western Conference's final playoff berth.

"Great game," said Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich, whose team missed two crucial free throws with under three minutes to go. "Too bad somebody had to lose and really too bad that it was us. We got great opportunities, ya know, that happens."

After Houston's Cuttino Mobley hit a jumper over Gary Payton for an 84-83 lead with 4:15 to play, Payton answered with a bucket in traffic and Vin Baker knocked down a shot to stretch the lead to three.

Moochie Norris made the second of two free throws with 2:55 to go and Mobley stole the ball from Payton and was fouled on a fast break. An 82 percent foul shooter, Mobley missed the second of two, leaving Houston down, 87-85.

"We had our shot," Mobley said. "They made the plays at the end of the game and we didn't. Right now, that's a bad time for this to happen but this is life."

Francis, who scored just nine points, missed a point-blank layup after blowing past Patterson on the blocks that would have given Houston a three-point lead with 31 seconds left.

After a Seattle timeout, Patterson, who scored 23 points, backed down Maurice Taylor in the paint for a bucket that gave the Sonics a 91-90 lead with 12 seconds to go.

"Mo Taylor just got into the game and we knew he was all stiff," Patterson said. "Gary called the play. Gary said, `Go to Ruben and let him get to the basket and score' -- that's what he told me during the timeout -- `or he's going to foul you.' And I used my quickness against Mo and I went past him and scored the layup."

Houston called time and went to Francis, who tried to pull up on the 6-5 Patterson for a wing jumper with 5.6 seconds left. The shot was blocked, Patterson leaked out for a dunk and Houston's Moochie Norris missed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer.

"I thought the last two plays of this game when we went to Ruben, you know we were patient, we allowed the floor to be spaced and Ruben attacked the basket," Sonics coach Nate McMillan said.

Walt Williams shot 5-of-6 from the arc and scored 23 points for the Rockets, who shot 47 percent (35-of-74).

The victory was the seventh in eight games for Seattle (38-34), which moved within one game of Houston (38-32) in the Western Conference standings. Time is running out on both teams as they chase Minnesota (41-28), which holds the eighth and final playoff berth.

Payton added 21 points on 10-of-24 shooting for Seattle, which had four players in double figures. Without center Patrick Ewing, sidelined with back spasms, Seattle outrebounded Houston, 39-36.

Houston shot 67 percent in the opening quarter but Seattle took a 53-50 advantage into halftime.
