Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady took off in the third quarter and none of the Indiana Pacers could run him down when it counted.

McGrady scored seven of his 28 points in a critical third-quarter spurt and grabbed a crucial rebound to run out the final seven seconds of the Orlando Magic's 84-82 triumph over Indiana.

The Magic, who had lost three of their last four games, trailed 47-42 just over a minute into the third quarter. But McGrady buried a long 3-pointer to ignite an 18-2 burst and Orlando was never headed.

Indiana, which kicked off a critical five-game road trip, got within 82-81 with 67 seconds to go but McGrady worked his way free and buried a short jumper 11 seconds later.

Indiana's Jalen Rose and Reggie Miller missed shots in the final minute. After Miller missed a 3-pointer with seven seconds to go, McGrady grabbed the rebound and was able to elude defenders while running out the clock.

"Well, we now know that T-Mac can play in a higher gear because that last play, well I have never seen him run harder in my life," Magic coach Doc Rivers said.

"On the road you want to go for the jugular," Miller said. "I had McGrady in the air for a step-back three. I got my feet set and it felt pretty on."

Darrell Armstrong and rookie Mike Miller scored 14 points each for Orlando.

Jermaine O'Neal had 26 points and 12 rebounds for Indiana. Rose scored 13 points and Miller 11 but the starting backcourt combined to make just 8-of-34 shots.

"We're not going to win too many games when Reggie and I have an overall shooting game like we did," Rose said. "That's probably only the second game this season when we were both unable to make shots.

"That's surprising because this is a good shooting arena," Armstrong said. "Guys chased and ran at them and made them work and didn't give them easy looks that made it tough especially since they won at home."

The loss, coupled with Boston's win over Chicago, dropped the Pacers into a tie with the Celtics for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Pacers have dropped eight straight road games and seven of their last 11 in Orlando.

The Magic are tied with Toronto for sixth place in the East.

After McGrady's 3-pointer got Orlando within 47-45 with 10:40 left in the third quarter, Al Harrington and Sam Perkins missed shots for the Pacers. Armstrong tied it with a short runner with 9:42 remaining and Michael Doleac hit two free throws 91 seconds later to give Orlando a 49-47 lead.

Indiana finally scored and got within 53-49 with 5:12 to go in the period. But Mike Miller buried a 3-pointer, McGrady sank a jumper from the left corner and Doleac hit a 17-footer to push Orlando's advantage to 60-49.

"We didn't match their energy and they took it to us and had us back on our heels," Rose said.

The Magic held a 68-58 cushion heading into the fourth quarter but Indiana began chipping away and was within 75-72 following a jumper by Reggie Miller with 4:37 remaining.

O'Neal had five straight points to get Indiana within 78-77 but McGrady sank two free throws and Armstrong hit a basket with 2:03 to go. After Indiana's Austin Croshere made a pair of free throws, Pat Garrity and Miller exchanged misses, setting up the final minute.

Indiana shot just 38 percent (29-of-76).
