Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Antonio McDyess scored 27 of his 35 points in the second half and overtime and George McCloud had an NBA season-high 22 assists as the Denver Nuggets rallied for a 109-104 victory over the Chicago Bulls.

McDyess made a pair of free throws to put Denver ahead for good at 103-101 with just over a minute to play. James Posey added two from the line to open a four-point lead before rookie Jamal Crawford responded with a 3-pointer to cut the Bulls' deficit to 105-104 with 37 econds left.

Posey made two more free throws and Ron Mercer missed a 3-pointer on the Bulls' next possession as the Nuggets snapped a five-game losing streak in Chicago.

"We know that George knows how to play," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "He delivered the ball to the right people at the right time. He really stepped up and gave us a great game."

McCloud's 22 assists was one shy of the team record, set by Larry Brown in 1972 and matched by Fat Lever in 1989. He eclipsed teammate Nick Van Exel's 20 assists against Seattle on December 2.

"I came into the league playing point guard. This wasn't something strange for me," said McCloud, a 6-8 forward. "I'm the type of player who will do what's best for my team."

Posey sank two free throws with two-tenths of second left in regulation to force the extra session. Chicago tried to ice Posey by calling back-to-back timeouts before his second attempt.

"I tried not to think about it," Posey said. "I knew I had one more to go after I hit the first one. This is the kind of situation you dream about. I don't know if it is a good strategy, but it didn't work this time."

"When they called those timeouts, we left him completely alone and just talked calmly about what defense to use for those two-tenths of a second," Issel said. "He's one of the players you want on the floor at that time of the game."

Denver outrebounded Chicago, 59-36. Posey had 14 rebounds and McDyess 12 for the Nuggets, who had 18 second-chance points off 19 offensive rebounds.

"I'm glad it was him and not me out there," McDyess said of Posey's two free throws. "He really stepped up like a man and knocked them down. This was big for us coming in here as it's been a long time since we won here."

Mercer scored 30 points and Elton Brand added 25 and 11 rebounds for the Bulls, who have lost 10 of their last 11 games.

Chicago shot 44 percent (39-of-89) but made just 22-of-36 (61 percent) free throws.

"I thought Denver did some things well down the stretch," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "They hit their free throws. McDyess was terrific. We played with great effort. We just did not get anything done in terms of a win."

Crawford, who finished with 17 points in 36 minutes off the bench, nailed a 16-foot jumper with 37 seconds left in regulation to give Chicago a 94-93 lead. Brad Miller made one of two free throws with 6.6 seconds to go for a 95-93 lead.

"He (Crawford) is getting quality minutes, winning minutes and he is taking advantage of it," Floyd said. "He had a good floor game. He has made as much progress as anyone we have."

Denver then went to Posey, who missed a game-tying attempt from the baseline with three seconds left. But he grabbed the rebound and was fouled by Crawford to set the stage for his heroics.
