Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Gary Payton really doesn't want to miss the playoffs for the second time in three years.

Payton scored 28 points and the Seattle SuperSonics completed a season series sweep of the Los Angeles Clippers with a 94-84 victory.

Seattle (41-34) moved one-half game ahead of Houston for ninth place in the Western Conference and trails eighth-place Minnesota by 2 1/2 games. Minnesota lost at Sacramento on Friday.

Seattle faces San Antonio and Houston on a two-game road trip beginning Tuesday, but Minnesota holds the tiebreaker edge over Seattle.

"We're right in the race," SuperSonics forward Ruben Patterson said. "We got San Antonio and Houston coming up and that'll be two big games for us. If we get those two, we're going to be right there in the hunt."

"We're not going to give up," Sonics guard Desmond Mason said. "We have to keep working, we have to keep the same mentality. We're going to come on Sunday and prepare for the road trip."

The SuperSonics are the first Western Conference team to sweep both the Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers in the same season. The Chicago Bulls accomplished the feat during the 1995-96 season.

In the third quarter, Payton went 4-of-4 from 3-point range and scored 12 points. He made back-to-back long-range shots to put Seattle up 57-56 with 6:26 to go.

Payton finished 5-of-6 from the arc, 5-of-5 from the line, had four steals and one block.

"Yeah, he stepped up big," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "You know our offense went into a stall there in that third and he knocked down a couple of big shots, big threes to get us going again."

Another bomb by Payton gave Seattle a 68-67 lead entering the final period. The Clippers still were within 78-76 with 7:13 to play, but Payton scored seven points in a 14-6 run that pushed the lead to 92-82 with 61 seconds remaining.

Vin Baker scored 13 points off the bench and Rashard Lewis added 12 for Seattle, which has won 10 of its last 11 games and gained its 100th all-time victory over the Clippers franchise.

The Sonics shot 41 percent (35-of-85), including 10-of-21 from the arc, and had 13 steals to move seven games over .500 for the first time this season.

Michael Olowokandi scored 12 of his 16 points in the first quarter. Eric Piatkowski added 15 for the Clippers, who have dropped seven straight road games.

"It was a good first quarter, but I play for the team," said Olowokandi. "We wanted to come in and get a quality win, not to necessarily be playoff spoilers, but we haven't beaten those guys in like two years. We came up short again."

Lamar Odom, who had a triple-double Wednesday against Detroit, scored just seven points on 3-of-6 shooting, adding six rebounds and five assists.

"We had the game in a workable situation playing on the road," Clipper coach Alvin Gentry said. "You can't have the type of play that we had in real crucial situations."

The Clippers trailed 36-26 midway through the second period but closed the quarter with a 16-3 spurt to pull within 47-46 at the break.

Los Angeles shot 46 percent (34-of-73) but gave up 25 points on 17 turnovers.
