Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- The Utah Jazz remained perfect in a city where they will never play again.

Karl Malone scored 16 of his 31 points in the decisive third quarter as the Jazz closed out an unbeaten run at GM Place by defeating the Vancouver Grizzlies, 92-73.

Malone had eight points in a 17-6 third-quarter run as Utah built a 69-57 lead with 2:13 left.

"I think Karl picked it up a notch. He does that so frequently," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "We've all ridden him for a long time. It's one thing to come out and play basketball, but it's another to have his enthusiasm and try to play like you're interested to win every game."

Tied at halftime, Utah outscored Vancouver, 28-16, in the third period to grab a 73-61 advantage. The Grizzlies got within seven points with less than eight minutes to go in the fourth quarter before Utah closed with a 16-4 surge.

With the Grizzlies relocating after the season, the Jazz remained the only Western Conference team with an unblemished record in Vancouver, improving to 11-0 all-time. The Jazz are 22-1 overall against the Grizzlies, including a 4-0 mark this season.

"I'm going to miss Canada, I'm going to miss it here a lot," Malone said. "I love it here, I love being here, I love playing in this city."

Malone went 12-of-26 from the field and scored 31 points to go with seven rebounds and eight assists. Olden Polynice went 5-of-5 from the field and had 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Jazz, who have won two in a row following a three-game losing streak.

"I think we need to get better still," said Utah guard John Stockton, who had 12 points and eight assists. "We need to turn it up several notches. It would be nice to start doing that now so we're geared up and ready for the playoffs."

Utah moved within two games of idle San Antonio for the lead in the Midwest Division and Western Conference.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 20 points and 12 rebounds and Michael Dickerson scored 14 points for the Grizzlies, who remained stuck at 99 wins in the franchise's six-year history. Vancouver has lost 10 of its last 11 games.

Malone went 5-of-8 from the field and Polynice added 10 rebounds in the third quarter, when as the Jazz shot 56 percent (9-of-16) and limited Vancouver to 29 percent (7-of-24) to take a 73-61 lead.

"In the third quarter, we started to play as a unit and we picked each other up because some of us weren't playing up to par," Polynice said. "But we continued to work hard and put the ball into Karl's hands."

The Grizzlies used an 8-0 run, including five points by Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, to cut the deficit to 76-69 with 7:52 to play in the fourth quarter. But John Starks scored half of his 14 points in the game-ending surge.

"We made the passes inside and then got the points in the paint, and that's our team," Malone said of the second half. "That's the way we play, inside out, and that's what got us the ballgame today."

Vancouver shot 29 percent (12-of-42) and scored 30 points in the second half.

"We hit a patch where we weren't scoring and from there defensively, we started breaking down," Abdur-Rahim said. "Our defense wasn't as sharp or good as it was in the first half and it cost us this game."

The Jazz led 25-22 after the first quarter before Abdur-Rahim had six points and five rebounds to help Vancouver forge a 45-45 halftime tie.

Utah shot 49 percent (37-of-76) and outrebounded the Grizzlies, 47-37.

Dickerson scored 14 points and Mike Bibby added 13 and nine assists for Vancouver, which shot 39 percent (29-of-75) and made just 11-of-19 free throws.
