Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Home is not so sweet for the Utah Jazz lately.

The Jazz lost their third straight game to a Western Conference contender and their composure in a 96-88 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, who became the fourth team in the West to clinch a playoff berth.

After rallying from an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to close to 86-84 with 2:40 to go, Utah fell apart. The Jazz missed two straight shots, committed a pair of costly turnovers and coach Jerry Sloan was whistled for a costly technical foul, allowing the Lakers to cruise to victory.

"Our decision making has been very questionable of late," Sloan said. "We've had a difficult time making decisions and we're looking to score rather than passing the ball."

Shaquille O'Neal had 31 points and 11 rebounds and made two clutch offensive plays down the stretch. After Utah closed within two, O'Neal sank an 18-foot fadeaway jumper and followed with a pair of free throws on Los Angeles' next trip.

"It took me a while to get going from the free-throw line," said O'Neal, who made 5-of-11 from the charity stripe. "But I usually make them in the fourth quarter whether I'm stroking it or not."

Robert Horry followed with a steal and breakaway dunk to extend the lead to 94-82, and Sloan's second technical of the fourth quarter gave the Lakers an extra point and essentialy sealed the game.

Sloan recieved his first technical with three minutes to go for nearly running onto the court after a foul call on Karl Malone. He was ejected for screaming at the officials after Horry's breakaway slam.

"I didn't like the way the official was visiting with the other team," Sloan said. "I have a ballgame going on and whenever it looks like we're out of it, it becomes a joke to them. I had trouble with all of them, I usually do. I'm going to argue what's right as long as I'm in the business. They can suspend me, kick me out of the league or do whatever they want. I really don't care."

Horry had 20 points and eight rebounds off the bench and Derek Fisher added 17 for the Lakers, who played without Kobe Bryant for the sixth time in seven games.

"Robert Horry is the initial reason I can say we were able to stay in this game and win it," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "That was a good game for the team. The guys did a good job executing tonight with a lot of different options."

Los Angeles shot 47 percent (36-of-76) from the floor and buried 8-of-16 3-pointers to move within one-half game of Utah for the third playoff position in the Western Conference. Rookie Mike Penberthy led the barrage from 3-point range, draining 3-of-4 for 10 points.

"We didn't seem to understand where the 3-point line was to try and defend it," Sloan said. "Penberthy certainly didn't have any trouble getting (3-point shots) and he was open most of the time."

Utah dominated inside and held a 42-35 rebounding edge but made just 2-of-7 from the arc.

Malone had 31 points and 14 rebounds and John Stockton had 19 and seven assists, but committed four of Utah's 15 turnovers. Donyell Marshall chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds.

"I've been disappointed that we've lost a lot of games at home this year," Malone said. "It's one of those things where we've got to step up."
