Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- In the second half, Jason Kidd played like he was gearing up for the playoffs. No one on the Charlotte Hornets did the same.

Kidd had 29 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and six steals as the Suns rallied from a 20-point deficit for a 103-94 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

Kidd dominated the second half as the Suns won in Charlotte for the first time since March 16, 1995 and moved within one game of Portland for sixth place in the Western Conference.

"(Kidd was) not only hitting shots, but stripping people of the ball," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "Playing how he's been playing of late, it picked up everybody's level of energy. Clearly, he went to another level and the other guys went with him."

Shawn Marion scored 25 points and Tom Gugliotta had eight of his 10 in the fourth quarter as the Suns won for the seventh time in eight games.

Charlotte controlled the first half and led, 61-41, two minutes into the third quarter before the roof caved in.

Kidd scored 15 points in the final 10 minutes of the quarter as Phoenix closed the third with a 34-12 run. A dunk by Tony Delk with 14 seconds left gave the Suns a 75-73 lead, their first since 2-0.

The Suns also scored the first nine points of the final period, highlighted by pair of jumpers from a Kidd and a three-point play from Marion. Charlotte could not recover and fell into a tie with Toronto for the No. 5 spot in the East.

"There are two halves to a game, four quarters to a game," Kidd said. "That is what this league is about. It's who wants it most. In the second half, we wanted it."

Kidd's effort early in the fourth personified the second half. He sank back-to-back jumpers to open the quarter and then picked off an errant pass from P.J. Brown and dished it to Marion, who was fouled on a dunk. The ensuing free throw gave the Suns a 82-73 lead.

After Charlotte inbounded, Kidd intercepted a long pass from Elden Campbell, drove to the basket and was fouled. He made both shots to give Phoenix a double-digit lead for the first time.

After being outscored 16-2 on the fast break in the first half, the Suns held a 22-2 edge in fast-break points after halftime.

Charlotte went scoreless for nearly four minutes bridging the last two quarters and had a two-game winning streak snapped.

David Wesley scored 22 points and Baron Davis added 17 for the Hornets, who shot 55 percent (21-of-38) in the first half but made just 14-of-41 shots after halftime. Jamal Mashburn scored eight of his 10 points in the opening quarter and dished out 12 assists.

"They came out in the second half, picked it up, and we just laid down," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "No one ran in the second half, we just didn't play. We have to find a way to correct this nonsense."

Jamal Mashburn and Wesley scored eight points a piece in the first quarter as Charlotte jumped out to a 29-19 lead. After Phoenix scored the first bucket of the game, the Hornets went on a 16-6 run for a 16-8 lead.

Charlotte held a 42-33 lead with five minutes left in the second when it scored 10 straight points led by Eddie Robinson, who scored six of his 18 during that span. He also sank a jumper with five seconds left in the first half, giving the Hornets a 56-39 lead at halftime.

Kidd had just four points, two rebounds and three assists in the first half.
