Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- What's Chinese for chalupa?

China's Wang Zhi Zhi became the first Asian to play in the NBA and treated fans at Reunion Arena to free chalupas with a late basket as the Dallas Mavericks cruised to a 108-94 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

The 7-1 Wang joined the Mavericks on Wednesday after his release was secured from the Chinese army. The 1999 second-round pick signed a two-year contract after participating in scrimmages this week.

Wang is not eligible for the playoffs, but coach Don Nelson said he would try to get him some playing time in Dallas' remaining regular-season games. The Hawks were an ideal opponent as they are on their way to the worst record in franchise history.

With 26 seconds left in the first half, Wang entered to a loud ovation. His only touch resulted in a turnover, but it hardly mattered as Dallas opened a 58-38 halftime lead.

"I did not think I would play him in the first half, but there was a situation where I could use him," Mavs coach Don Nelson said. "I was very comfortable with the lead."

"In the first half, I was trying to score, but I was a little nervous and I so I had the turnover," Wang said through an interpreter.

Wang returned with 7:40 to play and finished out garbage time. The lefthander's first basket came on an 11-foot jumper with 6:05 remaining and he added two free throws shortly thereafter.

"He's a very interesting player and I don't want to get everybody too wild about him in this situation because he surprised me a little bit," Nelson said. "You walk off the bench and make your first or second shot -- just dropped it -- and made his free throws. He looks like he belongs. He looks like, You know what? I'm a good player and I'm playing with good players and I belong. That's kind of the message I was getting."

"I felt so happy, I can score at that time," Wang said. "It makes me feel that I can score more in the future."

With 5:02 left, Wang made a short corner jumper that gave the Mavs a 101-81 lead. Whenever Dallas eclipses 100 points, fans can exchange their ticket stubs for free chalupas at Taco Bell.

"I know what it is because I was practicing with the Mavericks coach, Nelson," Wang said. "So when I was shooting the free throw in a free throw drill, he was always telling me what a chalupa is. I felt good when I made the chalupa shot."

In eight minutes, Wang made 2-of-5 shots and pulled down three rebounds. He was a small but historic part of the sixth win in seven games for Dallas (49-26), which moved into a tie with Utah for fourth place in the Western Conference.

Wang joins a team that has a German in Dirk Nowitzki, a Canadian in Steve Nash, a Mexican in Eduardo Najera and a Nigerian in Obinna Ekezie. He feels as if he belongs.

"It means that I can play in the NBA," Wang said. "I can score on a NBA floor. It also means that a Chinese player can also play against the best basketball players in the world."

"He's got the actions of a good basketball player," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "He's got good instincts, he's got a good feel."

Juwan Howard scored 20 points to lead five players in double figures. Nowitzki added 18 points and Shawn Bradley had 16, 15 rebounds and three blocks off the bench.

Nazr Mohammed scored a career-high 23 points and swept 16 boards for the Hawks (23-52), who had a two-game winning streak snapped and have lost five straight meetings with the Mavericks.

Howard scored 10 points in the first quarter as Dallas opened a 23-16 lead. Vernon Maxwell's two 3-pointers completed a 14-4 surge that opened the second period and pushed the advantage to 37-22. The Hawks never really threatened thereafter.

Wang's debut was highly anticipated by the sellout crowd of 18,187 and came with a political backdrop. His appearance came amid strained relations between the United States and China, which is detaining an American crew of a damaged spy plane. But there was nothing negative from the crowd.

"That was so nice for him because you just never know in this business," Nelson said. It was a real warm response. I'm sure he appreciates it."

"Despite all the other stuff that's going on we don't get into all that," Howard said. "We just go out compete, play hard. We pull together like brothers. That's what we're going to do with him. Right now he's a long way from home and he needs that togetherness from his new teammates."

After the regular season, Wang will not play again for the Mavs until perhaps December as he intends to return to China to play in the Asian Games. But his arrival could lay the groundwork for an influx of players from a country of 1 billion people that has recently caught basketball fever.

"There really aren't that many, but in the future there will be more," wang said. "Hopefully they will have the opportunity to play in the NBA."

Calvin Booth scored 12 points and Michael Finley 11 for the Mavs, who shot 42 percent (36-of-85) and made 29-of-35 free throws.

Brevin Knight scored 12 points and Jason Terry 10 for the Hawks, who shot 44 percent (37-of-84) and held a 50-41 advantage on the glass.
