Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Darius Miles is just 19 years old and Keyon Dooling is 20. But both came of age Friday night.

Miles and Dooling picked up the slack after Lamar Odom and Jeff McInnis were ejected and led the Los Angeles Clippers to a thrilling 113-110 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.

It was the Clippers' 12th overtime game and one of the best of the NBA season. Los Angeles blew its cool and a fourth-quarter lead, erased a six-point deficit in the final minute and came back from five points down in overtime.

"We battled the whole game and pulled it out again," Dooling said. "It was very exciting -- one of the best teams, great players, (we) lose our starting point guard and our best player to make it tough."

"It feels great. It was exciting to watch," McInnis said. "I'm happy for Dooling and all the guys (who) stepped up and won a big game for us."

Eric Piatkowski hit huge shots at the end of the fourth quarter and overtime. But the biggest plays were made on defense by Miles and Dooling, who were taken seven picks apart in the 2000 NBA draft.

Miles collected a season-high 26 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. He harassed Bucks All-Star forward Glenn Robinson into misses at the buzzer of both regulation and overtime.

"I'd like to see a rookie who's had a better year than Darius Miles," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "I can't believe we're not talking about him as Rookie of the Year. Over the course of the year he's just been sensational and I thought he was great tonight."

The 6-9 teenager never would have had the chance to play hero if not for Dooling, who had 12 points, six rebounds, five assists and the pivotal play of the game.

After drilling a 3-pointer with 31 seconds to play in regulation to cut a 100-94 deficit in half, Dooling poked the dribble away from Sam Cassell, dove to recover the loose ball and called Los Angeles' last timeout. On the next possession, Piatkowski made a 3-pointer from the left corner to tie it.

"As of late, we've been able to pull out some games in the fourth quarter," Dooling said. "We're learning how to close out games, but I also believe that we're learning how to battle back when we're down."

Miles opened overtime with a free throw before Milwaukee's bit three of Robinson, Cassell and Ray Allen all made tough jumpers, giving the Bucks a 106-101 lead with 2:44 to play. Dooling and Piatkowski made 3-pointers around two foul shots by Allen before Tim Thomas backed in for a short jumper to make it 110-107 with 1:34 left.

But Milwaukee did not score again. Miles missed two free throws but ran down his own rebound, drew another foul and made a pair to make it a one-point game with 1:22 remaining. After Miles threw away a pass on the fast break, teammate Sean Rooks drew a foul rebounding a miss and made both free throws for a 111-110 lead with 36 seconds to play.

Allen committed an offensive foul and Dooling worked the clock. Piatkowski got the ball outside the arc, took a dribble inside it and buried a leaning bank shot with 7.4 seconds left. Miles forced Robinson into an ugly miss on Milwaukee's last shot.

"I thought a lot of shots tonight were harder than that," Piatkowski said. "But it did come at a key time. It's a very makeable shot. I just don't get to shoot it that much."

Piatkowski scored 13 points for the Clippers, who improved to 3-9 in overtime. They are two away from Philadelphia's 1990-91 record for OT games in a season and one away from Baltimore's 1952-53 mark for OT losses. Los Angeles has won five straight home games, its longest such streak since February 1997.

Robinson scored 31 points, Allen added 26 and Cassell 22 for the Bucks, who fell to 3-2 on their six-game road trip. Milwaukee had won its last five meetings with Los Angeles.

"If (Robinson) can get 31 points on 30 shots, then we've done a great job on him," Gentry said. "I thought Darius played him as well as you can possibly play him because I think that Glenn Robinson's one of the best offensive players in the NBA."

Miles and Dooling were put on the spot by a bizarre situation late in the fourth quarter. The Clippers held an 86-83 lead when Odom was whistled for a technical foul with 4:23 to play. Twelve seconds later, he committed a foul and continued arguing, drawing another technical and an ejection.

"Our best player was gone, just talking it up for our team and telling the referee how it is," Miles said.

Odom was in no hurry to leave the floor and teammates stepped in on his behalf. McInnis was slapped with two quick technicals and also was ejected before Gentry finally called a timeout to get his overly exuberant team under control.

"To be honest, I was happy," Robinson said. "They'd had the momentum the whole game and the techs enabled us to start to take control."

"We should have let those guys (Odom and McInnis) play," Cassell said. "The other guys came in, moved the ball and won the game."

Allen made 2-of-3 technical foul shots and Cassell sank a pair of free throws for an 89-86 lead. A dunk by Miles kept the Clippers within 97-94 but Robinson responded with a 3-pointer with 43 seconds left.

Odom had 18 points and seven assists. Michael Olowokandi added 13 and 11 rebounds and Corey Maggette had 10 and seven for the Clippers, who shot 44 percent (41-of-94) and held a 55-44 edge on the glass.

Thomas scored 13 points for the Bucks, who shot 40 percent (39-of-97), including just 4-of-21 from the arc.
