Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- The problem for the Houston Rockets is that they play in the wrong division.

Steve Francis scored 28 points and Hakeem Olajuwon added 26 and 10 rebounds as the Houston Rockets completed a 16-0 sweep of Central Division teams with a 110-97 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

The Rockets became just the second NBA team to sweep an entire slate of games from a division. The Los Angeles Lakers went 12-0 against the Central in the 1982-83 season.

"It's always surprising when a team comes up with that kind of mark," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "Their team is very hard to match up with and they did what they needed to match up with the Central Division."

However, Houston (42-35) trails Minnesota (45-30) by four games in the race for the Western Conference's final playoff spot. The Timberwolves have a magic number of two to eliminate the Rockets.

"I don't think we are out of it mathematically," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "We still always believe there is hope. We're professionals and we have standards so even if we were out of it, we would still try to improve and play to win."

Lorenzen Wright scored to give Atlanta its final lead at 58-56 with 9:15 left in the third quarter. The Rockets ran off seven straight points, including five by Kenny Thomas, to take the lead for good at 63-58 with 7:17 remaining.

A basket by Dion Glover pulled Atlanta within 82-80 nearly two minutes into the fourth quarter. The Rockets responded with an 11-2 run, including five points from Matt Bullard, for a 93-82 advantage with 6:34 remaining.

In the final five minutes, Cuttino Mobley had seven points and Francis added six for the Rockets.

"Gradually, we are working to improve," Mobley said. "We are young and a lot of young teams don't win the championship. You have to go through your bumps and bruises."

Olajuwon made 12-of-17 shots in falling one point shy of his season high set in a loss at Dallas on March 3. Mobley added 21 points and Thomas had 14 and a season-high 13 rebounds for Houston, which held a 59-38 edge on the glass.

"It was a fun game," Olajuwon said. "I like to look forward. If we don't make it, the guys should feel satisfied that at least we finished with a winning record."

Houston picked up 29 assists, including eight by Moochie Norris off the bench. Francis added seven and needs 23 to become the first player in franchise history to reach 500 asssists and 500 rebounds in a season.

Jason Terry scored 23 points and Glover matched a season high with 17 for Atlanta, which has lost 11 straight road games. The Hawks made just 2-of-12 from beyond the arc, including 1-of-7 by Terry.

"If they were in the East, they would be in the playoffs," Terry said. "They are a great team and are very hard to match up with. Their guards are so quick and so hard for us to stop."

Atlanta rookies Hanno Mottola and DerMarr Johnson combined for just four points on 1-of-9 shooting in 43 minutes.

The Hawks played without the injured Toni Kukoc, who has plantar fasciaitis in his right foot.

Houston defeated Atlanta at home for the ninth time in 10 games.
