Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Tim Hardaway scored 23 of his 25 points in the first three quarters as the Miami Heat built a 10-point advantage before holding off the archrival New York Knicks, 81-76.

New York clamped down on Hardaway over the final 12 minutes and fought within 69-66 on a short jumper by Glen Rice with 3:20 remaining. Rice started in place of Latrell Sprewell, who had the stomach flu, but scored only seven points.

"We missed (Sprewell) a lot," Rice said. "His ability to penetrate and create off the dribble could have opened things up for us, but he wasn't here and we did a pretty good job of fighting back at the end."

Alonzo Mourning, playing his seventh game since returning from a kidney ailment and facing the Knicks for the first time this season, answered Rice's shot with a 12-footer with just under three minutes left.

"The intensity was definitely there, what else is new," Mourning said. "We need to be more of the aggressors and try and dominate the game even more so that they are not close finishes. We have the ability to do that when we are on top of our game mentally."

Miami's advantage grew back to eight points on two occasions over the next two minutes before back-to-back baskets by Charlie Ward and Marcus Camby, coupled with Camby's two free throws, cut the deficit to 76-74 with 25 seconds to play.

Ward, however, committed a flagrant foul on Bruce Bowen on the ensuing possession and the Heat guard made the second of two foul shots before Tim Hardaway went 1-of-2 from the line with 19 seconds left to seal it.

"It was obviously a survival of the fittest," said Miami coach Pat Riley. "We played extremely well in the third quarter and the inevitable always happens. There is not an explanation for it."

New York coach Jeff Van Gundy was ejected after disputing the flagrant foul call.

"We had a chance to win this game," said Van Gundy. "We didn't shoot particularly well but we fought extremely hard. We have to take care of the ball better if we're going to win these kind of games."

Former Knick Anthony Mason had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Heat, who lead New York by one game in the race for second place in the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference's third playoff seed.

"It was a good win for us," said Hardaway. "We just need to get our game right going into the playoffs. Mentally we needed this against the Knicks."

The No. 3 seed is critical because the fourth seed will face a probable second-round matchup with the Atlantic Division champion Philadelphia 76ers.

Camby collected 13 points and 16 rebounds, but the Knicks had a three-game winning streak snapped. They still hold the tiebreaker with Miami, having won three of the five meetings this season.

Hardaway was 9-of-16 from the field, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range. He began a 7-0 third-quarter burst with a jumper and gave the Heat a 56-40 lead by drilling a 3-pointer with 5:41 to play in the period.

Miami led by as many as 17 points in the third quarter before holding off the Knicks, who battled back despite going 1-of-13 from 3-point range. The Heat were 5-of-22 from behind the arc and shot 36 percent (25-of-69) from the field.

Larry Johnson had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Knicks, who connected on 42 percent (31-of-74) of their shots and held a 44-38 advantage on the boards.

Bowen had a career-high six steals before an American Airlines Arena-record 21,103 fans.

"I just came out and played as hard as I could," said Bowen. "I know my shot wasn't falling well tonight, but if your shot is not falling you have got to do something else to affect the game."
