Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- If the Cleveland Cavaliers played like this all season, they would be headed for the playoffs.

The Cavaliers, who were just 6-23 since the All-Star break, had their best first half of the season and received 62 points from their bench in a 101-78 rout of the playoff-bound Orlando Magic.

Lamond Murray and Andre Miller each scored 10 points in the first quarter as Cleveland shot 61 percent (14-of-23) from the field and jumped out to a 37-19 lead.

Murray scored all 10 of his first-half points as the Cavaliers went on a 22-3 run to bridge the first and second periods. Murray scored six during the run, which was capped by a fast-break layup by Bimbo Coles that made it 41-19 just two minutes into the second period.

Cleveland poured it on and led, 52-26, before a three-point play by Clarence Weatherspoon sparked a 17-8 surge. The run gave the Cavs their biggest lead, 69-34, with 13 seconds left in the half.

"We came out focused on both ends of the floor and did what we wanted to do," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "We had a game plan tonight and we stuck with it. We got a big lead because we attacked them."

Orlando, which shot just 33 percent (15-of-45) in the first half, scored the first nine points of the third quarter to close within 23 but would not get closer than 73-52.

The Cavs cooled down significantly in the second half and finished at just 41 percent (31-of-74) but still managed to snap a seven-game losing streak.

Murray led a potent Cleveland bench with 19 points while Coles added 12.

"It's definitely nice to have fun," Coles said. "It was good to come in and blow a team out and sit and laugh and have a good time. So many teams have done it to us this year."

Chris Gatling also scored 12 points to go with nine rebounds and Trajan Langdon chipped in 11, both off the bench.

Miller finished with 10 points and 12 assists and Weatherspoon had 10 points and 14 rebounds. Matt Harpring scored 10 before leaving midway through the second quarter after getting hit in the head going for a rebound.

Robert Traylor had eight points, eight rebounds and four blocks and overcame 0-for-6 shooting by making all eight of his free throws.

Orlando shot just 31 percent (30-of-98) and was outscored in the paint, 32-22, to fall one-half game behind Charlotte for sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

"When you come out and play like that, you deserve to get your butt kicked," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "The only thing we did well I thought, was down the stretch when we tried to prevent the fans from getting a free gift when they score 100 points. Besides that, we didn't do crap."

Tracy McGrady had 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists but made just 8-of-21 shots and had very little help.

"We wanted to force McGrady to spots that we wanted," Wittman said. "We kept him out of the perimeter and got the ball out of his hands."

Dee Brown was the only other Magic player in double figures with 11. Bo Outlaw grabbed 10 rebounds and had four blocks but scored just three points on 1-of-8 shooting.
