Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Voshon Lenard struck the blow that finally killed the Houston Rockets' playoff hopes.

Lenard sank a jumper with two seconds remaining to lift the Denver Nuggets to a 100-99 victory over the Rockets, who were mathematically eliminated from the Western Conference playoff race.

Lenard, who had 18 points off the bench, got a chance to win the game after Houston's Moochie Norris missed a jumper with 14 seconds to go.

Robert Pack, who nailed a jump shot with 37 seconds left to bring Denver within 99-98, drove the right baseline and made a cross-court bounce pass as he fell out of bounds. Lenard received the ball in the left corner, drove around Houston's Steve Francis as he went for the pass and pulled up for a 20-footer that buried the Rockets.

"For some reason they left me alone in the corner," Lenard said. "I was looking for the fall because they grabbed my arm, but once they didn't call it I focused on the shot and it went in."

"Robert was supposed to penetrate and he had to take it to the goal or take it out to the corner," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "It went exactly how we drew it up."

With three games left Houston is five games behind Minnesota, which clinched the final playoff spot in the Western Conference with a victory in Vancouver.

Pack had 20 points and 13 assists and former Rocket Kevin Willis collected 17 points and 20 rebounds for Denver, which played without Nick Van Exel and Antonio McDyess.

"Without Mac and Nick we are playing extremely hard and it's rewarding to have a team respond like that," Issel said. "I certainly appreciate the games that don't mean anything."

James Posey added 15 points off the bench, George McCloud had 12 and Raef Lafrentz 10 on 5-of-6 shooting for the Nuggets, who nailed 6-of-15 3-pointers.

Houston trailed, 80-71, with 1:28 left in the third quarter when its offense finally woke up, closing the quarter with six straight points.

The Rockets scored 13 of the first 17 points in the fourth quarter and took a 90-84 lead on a pair of free throws from rookie Dan Langhi with seven minutes remaining. However, they scored just nine points the rest of the way, allowing Denver to climb back and tie it on a 3-pointer by Lenard with 5:34 to go.

Norris' layup with 2:08 was Houston's last basket of the game and provided a 98-96 lead.

Neither team scored until Langhi went to the line with 53 seconds to go. He made just 1-of-2 and his miss was a costly one.

Cuttino Mobley scored 27 points on 11-of-19 shooting and Norris scored 19 of his 25 in the second quarter for Houston. Francis had 14 points and 11 assists and Langhi scored a season-high 13.

"We need to finish strong, we are just trying to get better," Norris said. "We're playing for pride. It's frustrating (not to make the playoffs), but I think we surprised some people. From last year to this year we made a big step."
