Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Damon Stoudamire scored 23 points as the Portland Trail Blazers tightened the Western Conference standings with a 116-88 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

Portland pushed its lead to 1 1/2 games over Phoenix, which lost to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday, and is one-half game behind Dallas for fifth in the closely bunched conference.

A 20-4 run pulled the Warriors into a 30-30 tie early in the second quarter and had the fans at the Rose Garden booing the Trail Blazers, who had come in with losses in 11 of their last 17 games. Portland responded with a 25-9 spurt that closed the half and opened a 55-39 lead.

"We had one little run on them, but we just got beat," Warriors coach Dave Cowens said. "They are a more skilled team. ... We had nothing to match that as far as skill level or shooting ability. We don't have that kind of guy on our team."

Steve Smith scored 18 points and Scottie Pippen added 13 for Portland, which improved to just 21-12 against teams below .500, including a season series sweep of the Warriors.

Antawn Jamison scored 27 points on 9-for-23 shooting for Golden State, which has lost eight in a row. Its starters shot just 35 percent (21-of-61) while the team shot 34-of-83 overall.

"It was all right," Cowens said of Jamison's performance. "But I don't think we were very efficient."

Portland's depth has been shortened with the absence of Shawn Kemp, who has entered a substance-abuse rehabilitation center, and Bonzi Wells, who is out for the season with a torn ACL.

"We have enough guys," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "There were a lot of positives tonight. Our goal now is to improve everyday as a basketball team. We have to play at a level that the top Western conference teams play at and we have to have confidence.

"It's not a situation where we have a lot of things that need fixing, but to win the playoffs, you do have to raise your game to the highest level."

McPherson scored 17 points and Corie Blount added 11 for the Warriors. Adonal Foyle added 10 points and 13 rebounds.

"Without our bench, this is a real ugly game." Cowen added.

The Warriors totaled just 15 assists. They were outscored 26-18 at the line and 24-6 from the arc.
