Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Imagine if David Robinson's back was feeling good.

Robinson ignored a sore lower back to collect a season-high 34 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks as the San Antonio Spurs clinched the Midwest Division title with a 91-79 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

Robinson was questionable right up to game time with his back problems, which forced him to sit out Sunday's win at Golden State and has put the offensive burden on fellow "Twin Tower" Tim Duncan.

"This morning I felt a little sore but I had a good pregame warmup and stretched it out and it felt pretty good after that," Robinson said.

"He was moving well tonight," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "He got loose. He's had a twinge in his back, so we sat him last game. He felt good tonight."

Robinson started at center and made 14-of-18 shots as he eclipsed 30 points for the first time this season. He scored 13 points in the third quarter, including nine in a 13-2 surge that broke open a close game.

"I just tried to keep it loose and keep it warm," Robinson said. "I knew that I'd have to sit some at the end of quarters and at the half. But we stretched it out and it felt real good in the second half."

"It was Big D's night," Duncan said. "He cleaned up on the defensive end, rebounded and dunked over everybody."

Duncan had 25 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for the Spurs (56-22), who won their fourth Midwest Division title in seven seasons and took another step toward securing the best record in the NBA.

San Antonio has won five straight games to move two games ahead of Philadelphia, which lost at Miami. The Spurs hold a 2 1/2-game lead on Sacramento (52-24) for the best record in the Western Conference.

"It was great to win the division," Spurs forward Malik Rose said. "Hopefully we take the next step and get the West and then on to try and take the whole thing."

Michael Finley scored 25 points and Dirk Nowitzki added 20 for the Mavericks, who shot just 35 percent (29-of-82) and have lost two in row following a three-game winning streak. Dallas is just one-half game in front of Portland for sixth place in the West.

"I'd like to thank Pop for saving David Robinson for us," Dallas coach Don Nelson joked. "David was the difference. I thought we had a decent game plan, but we didn't have him penciled in for 34."

The Spurs took control with a run that wrapped around halftime. Sean Elliott's layup gave San Antonio the lead for good at 41-40 with 1:57 left and started an 8-2 surge that closed the half.

The third quarter began with another 8-2 burst by the Spurs that included two inside hoops apiece by Robinson and Duncan for a 55-44 advantage.

A jumper by Juwan Howard pulled Dallas within 55-50 midway through the period before Robinson took charge. Over the next 5 1/2 minutes, he had three free throws, a layup, a jumper and a dunk to rebuild the lead to 68-52 in the final minute.

"I haven't dunked that much in years," Robinson said. "It felt good. I like the up-and-down games."

"David was big, he was key, he was unstoppable," Howard said. "We tried to find other ways to stop him but he really had it going. He was finishing strong and hitting the outside jumpers."

Samaki Walker swept 10 boards for the Spurs, who shot 42 percent (34-of-81). Howard scored 16 points for the Mavs.
