Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Jason Terry scored 38 points and Nazr Mohammed added 24, both career highs, as the Atlanta Hawks defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers, 107-102, in a matchup of teams headed to the offseason.

Terry made 13-of-23 shots and triggered a 22-2 run bridging the third and fourth quarters. He matched his previous high set December 12 against Sacramento and tied February 16 vs. Golden State.

"We're looking for any positive things going into the summer so we could carry it over into the next preseason," Terry said, who rejoined the team after the birth of his newborn child. "My 38 points was a great birthday gift for my new daughter."

The Hawks trailed 82-71 with 2:58 to play in the third period when Terry had a layup before Mohammed scored 11 points in the surge to give Atlanta the lead for good.

"JT got hot so they knew they had to step out on him," Mohammed said. "And that opened it up for me down low and they were giving it to me down low, and that opened up the whole game."

Cleveland pulled within 103-99 on Matt Harpring's jumper with 20 seconds to play. Trailing 104-100, it had a chance to make it interesting but Andre Miller missed the first of two free throws with 9.5 seconds left.

"It's the same scenario we kind of have a problem with a lot," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "Up 11, we kind of had control of the game up to that point. The last 2 1/2 minutes of the third, we don't do a good enough job of understanding why you build leads or how you get to that point. For whatever reason, we totally got away from what was working, then they get right back into the game."

Tied at 59-59 early in the third quarter, Cleveland outscored Atlanta, 23-12, to take the 11-point lead.

Clarence Weatherspoon scored 22 points and Lamond Murray had 17 of his 19 in the second quarter for the Cavaliers. Harpring and Trajan Langdon added 14 each for Cleveland, which failed in a bid to win back-to-back games for just the second time since the All-Star break.

"The end of the third and the beginning of the fourth quarter," Weatherspoon said. "They went on a big run and we never responded. They went from minus-9 to plus-9 in about four minutes. That gave the momentum to them and put the pressure on us to score. We jsut weren't getting to the basket and to the foul line."

Atlanta snapped a three-game losing streak and grabbed just their eighth win since the All-Star break, one more than Cleveland.

Dion Glover and Cal Bowdler each added 10 points for Atlanta, which shot 48 percent (42-of-86) and limited the Cavs to 44 percent (34-of-77).
