Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The battle between Michael Jordan's current team and his former one resulted in a rare road victory for the Chicago Bulls.

Rookie Marcus Fizer scored the winning basket with 20 seconds left as the Chicago Bulls ended a franchise-record 25-game road losing streak with a 113-109 victory over the Washington Wizards.

"We came out tonight with ending that long road losing streak in mind, but those guys fought really hard right down to the end," Fizer said. "We knew that we didn't play well last night (against Milwaukee). It's something that we wanted to stop."

A basket by Loy Vaught gave Washington its first lead since late in the first quarter at 109-108 with 35 seconds left. On the next possession, Chicago went to Elton Brand, who missed a baseline shot. But Fizer scooped up the rebound and scored for a 110-109 advantage.

Vaught missed a jumper that would have given Washington the lead and Chicago rookie Jamal Crawford grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Crawford made 1-of-2 for a 111-109 lead with 4.3 seconds to go.

The Wizards took possession at midcourt but Richard Hamilton's inbounds pass went straight to Brand, who found a streaking Crawford for a dunk at the buzzer for the final margin.

"It felt good because we didn't want to lose 26 in a row on the road," Chicago forward Ron Artest said. "We lost 25, and that's horrible. All in all, we're still a horrible, horrible team, but we got the win. I'm happy to go home and go out. When we get a win, it's like winning the championship back in Chicago. We can lose 50 in a row and get one win and be king, so we can go home and be king."

Brand scored 26 points and Fizer added 21 off the bench for Chicago, whose last road victory was a 104-86 triumph at Boston on December 13. The Bulls won despite allowing Washington to shoot 64 percent (45-of-71).

"It was a nice win for us," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "You can't ever feel too good about them when you give up 64 percent and win, but offensively our guys were willing to move the basketball and we played off the post late, which was important."

A layup by Brand gave Chicago its largest lead at 59-44 with 2:42 left before halftime. The Wizards closed the half with a 13-2 spurt to trail, 61-57, at intermission.

The Bulls took a 101-92 lead with 5:26 to play on a 3-pointer by Fred Hoiberg. Washington ran off nine straight, including five points by Jahidi White, to tie the score at 101-101 with 3:35 to go.

Chicago shot 54 percent (47-of-87) and racked up 30 assists, including nine by Artest. Crawford and Artest each scored 17 points as the Bulls placed five players in double figures.

"Obviously, we had difficulty stopping each other," Washington coach Leonard Hamilton said. "I thought for us (we) had a difficult time guarding Brand. We didn't have quite enough to get over the hump at the end of the game."

Rookie Courtney Alexander scored a season-high 28 points and Hamilton finished with 25 for Washington, which dropped their sixth in a row.

"We have a young coach and a lot of new guys on the team," Alexander said. "We are trying to do something that is very difficult now. Hopefully, with time and experience, it will get better."

White scored 19 points and Laron Profit added 12 as Washington placed all five starters in double figures. The Wizards held a 33-31 rebounding edge, including 13 by Michael Smith.
