Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Maybe the Orlando Magic would be better off as the eighth seed.

The unlikely duo of Troy Hudson and Dee Brown keyed a big second quarter as the Magic rolled to a 101-77 rout of the Philadelphia 76ers.

After losing the first meeting with the 76ers, the Magic captured the last three games against the team that already has wrapped up the top seed in the Eastern Conference.

"We won one here and we lost two heartbreakers," Sixers coach Larry Brown said. "The results were 1-3, but this was the only game that wasn't a basketball game. I think the score was indicative of the way we got outplayed. We got outcoached, we got outplayed; they executed like crazy and we didn't."

Tracy McGrady scored 25 of his 31 points in the first half for Orlando, which is one-half game behind sixth-place Charlotte in the East. The Magic are four games in front of eighth-place Indiana.

Averaging a combined 12.6 points, Hudson and Brown accounted for 21 of the Magic's 32 in the second quarter, when Orlando opened a 61-36 advantage.

"This is the best we've played in the situation we've been in," Dee Brown said. "We've had a few good games this year against Philadelphia."

Tyrone Hill scored 16 points for Philadelphia. Allen Iverson, the NBA's leading scorer, was held to 12 points on 5-of-15 shooting. It was Iverson's third-lowest point total of the season.

Still with an outside shot at garnering the NBA's best record, the Sixers played as if they have no shot. After George Lynch scored the game's first basket, Philadelphia trailed the rest of the way.

McGrady, who matched a career high with 44 points and hit a shot in the waning seconds to help Orlando win at Philadelphia on March 28, nearly beat the Sixers singlehandedly in the first quarter of this contest.

The emerging superstar scored in a variety of ways in the opening period and finished with 16 in the quarter as Orlando raced to a 29-19 lead. He made 5-of-8 shots from the field and went 5-of-6 at the line.

"Tracy McGrady set the tone for us as far as being aggressive," said Magic coach Doc Rivers.

Orlando shot 62.5 percent (10-of-16) in the first quarter.

A short jumper by Todd MacCulloch pulled Philadelphia within six points early in the second quarter, but Hudson scored five straight and McGrady drilled a 3-pointer, giving Orlando a 39-25 advantage with 7:22 to play before halftime.

Brown helped the Magic increase the lead, hitting three 3-pointers in the final 5:02 of the half. Meanwhile, Iverson was struggling with six points on 3-of-13 shooting.

Hudson finished with 21 points and Brown 17 for the Magic, who led by as many as 34 in the second half.

"He's a great player in my eyes," said Hudson, who guarded Iverson most of the night. "When you're playing against a guy like Iverson, for me, there's a lot of pride at stake. I just wanted to come out and match his energy."
