Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- If the season were any longer, the New Jersey Nets might not have a team left.

The Nets, who entered the game with eight players on the injured list, saw yet another teammate fall in a 97-91 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Starter Johnny Newman joined the ever-growing list of battered Nets after leaving the game with a knee injury with 11:18 left in the third quarter.

Newman had come into the game with a streak of 215 consecutive games played, but playing for injury-prone New Jersey finally caught up with him.

"I would like to keep that streak alive for him," New Jersey coach Byron Scott said. "If we can get him 10 minutes then I will do it. But it might be a situation, with two games left, to call it a season for him."

The Nets have lost 330 games to injury among 10 players this season and, barring a miracle, will set the franchise record with 344 by the end of the season. Newman may not miss a game, however.

"I'm feeling all right right now," Newman said. "Not as sore as I was earlier. I'm just going to take it easy tomorrow and be ready for Sunday."

Despite playing with a largely inexperienced group after Newman went down, New Jersey held an 85-78 lead with 5:27 remaining after a 3-pointer by Doug Overton, who had 12 points. But that is when the Nets ran out of gas.

Cleveland scored five straight points to close within a basket. After a bucket by Overton, the Cavs scored six in a row and took the lead for good, 89-87, on a shot by Matt Harpring with 1:49 left.

Clarence Weatherspoon scored six of his 10 points during the 13-2 run Cleveland used to take control. The Cavaliers won for just the second time in their last 10 games while sending the Nets to their fourth straight loss.

Andre Miller scored 26 points and Lamond Murray added 22 points. The pair combined to make 20-of-30 shots from the floor for Cleveland, which shot 51 percent (38-of-75) to overcome 21 turnovers.

"We were kind of lethargic coming out to start the game," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "Turning the ball over as much as we did, we were lucky to win the game. We re-established ourselves and got back to executing again."

Rookie Chris Mihm had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Cavs, who snapped a 12-game road losing streak.

"We really wanted to break that streak of road losses," Mihm said. "It was getting a little old."

Cleveland has won 16 of its last 19 meetings with New Jersey and four in a row at Continental Airlines Arena.

The Cavaliers played without forward Chris Gatling, who was suspended one game and fined $7,500 for his part in an altercation with Atlanta's Lorenzen Wright on Wednesday.

New Jersey's Keith Van Horn scored 23 points and Lucious Harris collected 19, but combined to make just 14-of-37 shots.

Aaron Williams added 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting off the bench for the Nets, who committed 19 turnovers and were outrebounded, 41-31.
