Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady came up just short.

McGrady was one shy of 50 points and left a potential tying jumper on the front rim in the final seconds as the playoff-bound Orlando Magic suffered a 113-110 loss to the Washington Wizards, who snapped a six-game losing streak.

McGrady established a career high in his fifth 40-point game of the season. He made 19-of-31 shots and 9-of-14 free throws, adding eight rebounds and seven assists.

The All-Star swingman scored Orlando's last seven points to reduce a 110-103 deficit in the final two minutes. He made a 3-pointer and two jumpers on consecutive trips to pull the Magic within 112-110 with 34 seconds left.

Washington's Christian Laettner lost the ball out of bounds with 14 seconds left, setting the stage for McGrady. He took a pass at mid-court, dribbled into the lane against Laron Profit and rose up for a nine-footer that he left short.

"I was a little fatigued at the end and I just missed the shot," McGrady said. "They came out to play and made it difficult for me to get an open look."

"Most guys prefer their right hand or their left hand, but he's one of those guys that like to go either way," Profit said. "One thing I kind of notice about him is that when he goes left, he likes to pull up, and I tried to anticipate it and got a hand up."

Profit rebounded and was fouled with 6.3 seconds to go. He made 1-of-2 from the line, giving Orlando one last chance. This time, McGrady drew the double-team at the arc and passed to Pat Garrity, who beat Washington here with a 3-pointer on March 6, 2000. But this one bounced away and the horn sounded.

"We got a three, I just didn't make the shot," Garrity said. "You can't blame it on T-Mac; he's the one who brought us back."

"He (McGrady) is an outstanding player and we were very fortunate that he just didn't get a shot in the last possession," Wizards coach Leonard Hamilton said. "We defended as well as he could be defended at times but he still kept knocking them in. He is a great player."

Richard Hamilton scored 30 points and Laettner added 26 and 10 rebounds for the Wizards, who ended an eight-game skid to the Magic and avoided their second straight season series sweep.

Troy Hudson scored 23 points for the Magic (43-37), who fell one game behind sixth-place Charlotte in the Eastern Conference. If Orlando remains seventh, it would open the playoffs against the Milwaukee Bucks.

"We're upset we lost this game," Garrity said. "We need to think one game at a time; it's almost playoff time."

The Wizards trailed 82-79 entering the fourth quarter but took the lead for good at 87-86 on two free throws by Tyrone Nesby with 8:59 to play.

Two free throws and a jumper by Popeye Jones, who scored 14 points, extended the advantage to 101-92. Laettner beat the shot clock with a jumper to make it 110-103 with 1:45 to play, setting up McGrady's finish.

"Popeye and Christian really did a great job of locating themselves and putting themselves in position where they can make the shot or get the rebound," Richard Hamilton said.

Both teams shot well. Washington shot 53 percent (38-of-72) and made 37-of-48 free throws. Orlando shot 50 percent (41-of-82) but made just 21-of-36 at the line.

McGrady scored 23 points in the first half but the Wizards grabbed a 57-53 lead behind 18 points from Hamilton.
