Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Chucky Atkins scored seven of his 21 points in overtime as the Detroit Pistons extended their winning streak to a season-high four games with a 129-124 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Atkins made two key shots in the extra session to propel the Pistons to their seventh win in nine games and their second in six overtime contests this season.

"We would love to have this streak a little earlier," Detroit's Jerry Stackhouse said. "We had some games slip away from us early on. If we had this streak earlier, maybe it would have given us confidence."

Atkins made the first jumper of the extra period, sparking a 7-2 run. After the Hawks closed within 123-122 with 2:32 to go, Atkins drained a 15-foot juper to extend the lead and Atlanta never got closer than three points thereafter.

"I started off kind of slow tonight but I felt my shot would start falling," Atkins said. "Once I got it going, I knew we had a pretty good chance of winning."

Stackhouse scored 37 points and Corliss Williamson added 20 but missed a key free throw that could have given Detroit the win in regulation.

Atlanta's Jason Terry sank a pair of free throws with eight seconds left in the fourth quarter to go ahead, 115-114, but the Hawks fouled Williamson on the Pistons' final possession.

He went to the line with two seconds left with a chance to give Detroit the lead, but made just 1-of-2. Terry missed a half-court shot at the buzzer.

"We put ourselves in a bind by not closing the game when we could have," Stackhouse said. "We seemed to be dominating the game."

Joe Smith scored 15 points before fouling out and Ben Wallace collected nine and 15 rebounds for the Pistons, who swept the season series from the Hawks for the first time since the 1990-91 season.

"We did a lot of good things offensively, not so many defensively," Detroit coach George Irvine said. "Both teams competed hard to win a game that was basically meaningless."

The Hawks also had numerous opportunities to win in regulation but committed costly turnovers down the stretch.

The most notable came with 18 seconds left when the Hawks were inbounding the ball with a 113-112 lead. Detroit would have had to put Atlanta at the line, but the pass from rookie DerMarr Johnson sailed over Terry's head and out of bounds without being touched.

"This is just a classic case of not knowing how to finish a game," Atlanta forward Lorenzen Wright said. "We threw the ball away and we didn't deserve to win this game."

"There was a little miscommunication," Johnson said. "One play doesn't make a game."

Detroit regained the lead on two free throws from Stackhouse with 13 seconds remaining.

"Obviously, you can look back through the game and see a lot of different opportunities to change the outcome," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "That is the case with any overtime game."

Wright scored a season-high 31 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and Terry added 25 points but fouled out early in overtime. Wright and Terry combined to make 21-of-38 shots from the field for Atlanta, which shot 47 percent (46-of-97).

Nazr Mohammed had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Brevin Knight chipped in 15 and 11 assists as the Hawks lost for fifth time in six games.
