Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Travis Best and Zan Tabak led a third-quarter attack that lifted the playoff-bound Indiana Pacers to a 93-86 victory over the withered Chicago Bulls and their first four-game sweep of the season series.

The Pacers (40-40) have won a season-high seven straight games to reach the .500 mark for the first time since December 9. However, Orlando's win earlier Sunday locked Indiana into eighth place in the Eastern Conference.

"Now we can put some tapes together and concentrate on one team," said Indiana coach Isiah Thomas said, whose team will meet the East-leading Philadelphia 76ers in the first round. "We need to finish out the regular season, though, on a positive. The way it looks now, we'll play against the league's MVP and Coach of the Year. I just -- it's just, 'Welcome to the playoffs, Isiah.'"

"We can't worry about our record," Pacers guard Reggie Miller said. "We just want to keep playing well now that we're in. We want to continue this winning streak. The game next week against Philadelphia may not be big for them, but for us, we want to play well against them and put something in the back of their minds."

Best and Tabak tallied eight points apiece, combining for 16 of Indiana's 27 points in the third quarter, when Chicago managed just 13.

The Pacers shot 62 percent (13-of-21) compared to 14 percent (3-of-21) for the Bulls, who saw a 47-46 halftime lead turn into a 73-60 deficit.

"When you play against a team like Chicago, there are going to be ups and downs," Pacers swingman Jalen Rose said. "They were up in the first half and played us well. We wanted to be one of the hottest teams going into the playoffs, we wanted that momemtum and to have that positive feeling going forward."

Miller scored 15 points and Rose narrowly missed a triple-double with 10 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds for Indiana, which registered its third sweep of Chicago since entering the NBA in 1976.

"I was conscious of the fact that I needed a rebound to get that triple-double," Rose said. "I let my teammates down when I didn't get it. They were trying to help me in every way. I guess I'm always one short my whole life."

The Pacers won both meetings in the 1979-80 season and all three matchups in the lockout-shortened 1998-99 season. But this was the first time they had won all four meetings.

The Bulls scored seven straight points to cut the deficit to 85-80 with 2:11 remaining. Chicago kept coming and got within 87-84 on rookie Marcus Fizer's 18-footer with 68 seconds to play.

However, Indiana's reserves answered as Austin Croshere converted a pair from the line, Jeff Foster hit a layup and Tyus Edney made two free throws to close the scoring and hand Chicago a loss in the last home game of a miserable season.

"We have an appreciation for the fans and their resiliency," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "I know its been one of the more trying seasons in Bulls annals. Hopefully, we'll give them a better product and work towards that in the offseason and give them some hope."

Elton Brand scored 17 points and Ron Artest added 16 for the Bulls, who lost for the 11th time in 12 games.

"We will learn how to win late in the game," Brand said. "We are coming together, there will be pressure on us. We will improve. I want to stay professional and play my hardest. These are young guys watching me as a veteran so I cannot take a day off. I will give my best the last two games."
