Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Andre Miller scored 10 of his 20 points in a decisive third quarter as the Cleveland Cavaliers posted a 106-98 victory over the Washington Wizards, who tied a team record with their 61st loss.

With Miller leading the way, the Cavaliers outscored the Wizards, 29-18, in the third period to open an 81-70 lead and stretched the advantage to as many as 17 in the fourth quarter. The game was tied, 52-52, at halftime.

"I thought Andre was aggressive in his play out there," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "He got it started and he kind of kept us going from an offensive standpoint."

The loss total matched the most for the Wizards since the team moved to the Baltimore-Washington area in 1963. The Baltimore Bullets lost 61 games in 1966-67, a mark equaled by the Washington Bullets in 1994-95. The franchise record for losses was set by the Chicago Packers, who went 18-62 in their inaugural season of 1961-62.

Washington (19-61) has dropped 12 of its last 15 contests and has only seven wins in its last 33 games.

To make matters worse, The Wizards were hit with five technical fouls in the second half. Richard Hamilton was ejected with 10:04 left after picking up his second technical, while coach Leonard Hamilton, Tyrone Nesby and Popeye Jones also were slapped with technicals.

"Obviously, the frustration set in," Leonard Hamilton said. "A guy like Popeye Jones, who really doesn't complain about anything, and Rip (Richard Hamilton), who is as mild as a guy can get, allow themselves to get frustrated under those circumstances and mentally it affects you in a negative way."

The Cavaliers (29-51) have won three of their last four games and need to split their last two contests to reach 30 victories.

In the absence of Richard Hamilton, Courtney Alexander scored a career-high 30 points for the Wizards.

"Obviously, with Richard being tossed, I needed to assert myself a little bit more," Alexander said. "That is something I am not really concentrating on. My teammates are doing a great job of getting me the ball."

"It is one of those things that just happens," Richard Hamilton said of his ejection. "It was a very physical game out there."

Miller's jumper capped an 8-0 spurt that gave the Cavaliers a 66-58 lead with 5:56 to go in the third quarter. Washington's Christian Laettner hit an 18-footer with 15 seconds left in the period to make it 81-70.

The Cavaliers steadily pulled away in the fourth, building a 95-78 lead on Chris Gatling's dunk with 6:15 remaining.
