Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Most Western Conference teams do not want to face the Los Angeles Lakers in the playoffs. They should be happy they will not be facing the Los Angeles Clippers.

Lamar Odom fell one assist short of another triple-double as the Clippers continued their strong home play with a 100-80 rout of the playoff-bound Phoenix Suns.

Odom finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists for Los Angeles, which improved to 13-3 at home since February 1 -- the best record in the West in that span.

"It was a great win because we played a quality team that had everything to play for," Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry said. "I thought we played so great from start to finish. We never let them back in the game."

The Suns failed to clinch at least the sixth seed in the West and dropped into a tie with Portland with one game left for both teams. They are assured of finishing either sixth or seventh.

Phoenix took an 11-7 lead midway through the first quarter, prompting a timeout by Gentry. The Clippers came out and got an alley-oop dunk from rookie Darius Miles that triggered a 10-0 spurt for a 17-11 lead with 2:49 left.

"I think they have given us problems all year with their youth and athleticism," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "Especially when Miles got in there and got a lot of lobs and dunks."

Los Angeles took command in the second quarter. Odom had a pair of baskets in a 12-4 spurt that gave the Clippers a 38-23 advantage 6:36 before halftime.

Rookie Quentin Richardson added a dunk and a short hook to make it 47-27 with just over two minutes to go. Los Angeles settled for a 53-34 halftime advantage.

A basket by Michael Olowokandi capped an 11-3 spurt and gave Los Angeles its largest lead at 74-45 with 3:46 to go in the third quarter.

McInnis led the Clippers with 20 points and a career-high 13 assists. Olowokandi scored 13 points for Los Angeles, which snapped an eight-game home losing streak to the Suns.

"We just came out and did what we had to do," McInnis said. "We knew we had a great opportunity to close out with a win (at home) if we played tough, and we did."

Miles had 11 points off the bench for the Clippers, who shot 51 percent (43-of-84). Los Angeles also held a 48-41 rebounding advantage, led by Olowokandi's nine.

Shawn Marion had 18 points and 12 rebounds and Rodney Rogers scored 15 points off the bench for Phoenix, which was coming off Sunday night's difficult victory over Sacramento. The Suns' loss gave Dallas at least the fifth seed.

"Three teams in the NBA have played 23 times back-to-back -- us, Miami and Atlanta," Skiles said. "We have the best record in those situations. Dallas has played 13, which is a joke in NBA scheduling. I don't know how you can rationalize that."

Tony Delk finished with 13 points and Jason Kidd added 12 and seven assists for Phoenix, which shot 39 percent (34-of-88).

If the Suns defeat Utah on Wednessay, they will gain the third seed. If Portland wins on Tuesday and the Suns lose, they will finish seventh.

"Tonight, we didn't have it," Marion said. "We've still got a chance to move up or down in the standings. We should be looking at our possibilities. We should have come out there with a little more than we had tonight."

The Clippers exited to a standing ovation from the remainder of a sellout crowd of 19,347. The crowd was their 11th sellout of the season -- a new franchise record.

"The electricity in this building tonight was sensational," Gentry said. "I thought the fans were enthusiastic. We as a team have a lot of work to do. There's a tremendous gap between where we are right now and making the playoffs. But I like our upside."
